I hope that if people are tempted to cover up like this in the future, that this will persuade them otherwise. As for colleges not being about sports, I wish that was true. I believe, however, that the funding for a lot research, academic scholarships, and club sorts at Division 1 schools come from the money that they get from their teams. Ohio State comes to mind.

Isn't sports a career field though? I'm not just talking about athletes, I'm talking about everything involved from coaches to trainers to broadcasters.

College sports are part of the learning for professional fields.

And what do you want them to wake up to? You're not very clear. Do you want college athletics to go away, since your statement is that colleges are for learning and not sports?

What is it exactly you want? This is sort of a vague no direction thread.

I still don't agree with Penn State taking the statue of Joe Paterno down. The man was a coach there for over 60 years. Have some respect

They didn't put up a statue of him because he was a good person. They put up a statue because he was an amazing coach, who gave his life to the Penn State football program

He was a criminal. Statues of OJ shouldn't exist and neither should statues of Paterno. This is beyond the usual "not being a nice guy" situation. Paterno is a criminal.

So is Michael Vick. It doesn't make him worse of a football player, just like this scandal doesn't make JoePa any worse of a coach.

It's about football. This isn't an orphanage, it's a college with a college football team

There is a big difference. Vick went through the justice system and paid his debt. Even still he's not wildly popular nationally. And we'll see if he's ever in a position to have a statue.

If this had happened when Paterno was younger and he went through the criminal justice system I'd have no problem arguing that he should be eligible to get a job, thought that implies that a school would want to take him.

But a statue is the celebration of the complete man, not just his deeds on the field. And its one thing to celebrate the life of a guy that could be a jerk. Its another thing to celebrate the life of a murderer, a dog killer or a child abuse enabler. You just don't do that. Its crass and classless.

His career now stands as it is - the 12th winningest coach in the sport. But he was also an awful human being and for that you don't get a statue anymore.

I wish. However, probably not. We live in a society that bows down to the sports Gods it creates. Very sad.

I agree with you that college should be about academics, but college sports make lots of money and money is what rules, unfortunately.

Colleges are money machines. The quality of education has been dropping steadily since the Dept of Education came into existence. The only lesson colleges are likely to learn from this is 'don't get caught'.

Do you think any other football power is going to topple its football program when a thing like this comes up again. Money talks.
