It won't change my behavior because I already refrain from texting while driving... And I use my handsfree system most of the time for phone calls, even though I think laws against talking on a phone while driving are idiotic.
We already have a law.. called Inattentive Driving!! why add more laws? We should abolish people from having kids in the car... that's more distracting than texting. Ever try to reach a bottle at 70mph in traffic, and no place to pull off the road, while the kid is screaming?
I don't text while driving, but when the freeway comes to a standstill and you are creeping along at 2 miles an hour, I not only text, but usually put a movie on to take my mind off of just sitting on a freeway and getting nowhere fast
First of all, I neither call, answer my phone, nor text while driving. Those that do are idiots.
Rigid enforcement of 'distracted driving' laws coupled with severe fines and loss of licenses are the only things that will curb it. Far too many folks are 'stuck on stupid'!
its really hard to curb something that doesn't happen already... heck its a good day when I remember to charge my phone let alone actually carry it....
The states that did ban texting while driving did so on "feelings" and not studies. They INCREASE the number of accidents by banning. People are going to text and drive. When it is banned people keep the phones in their lap and look DOWN instead of at the wheel and looking at the phone AND AHEAD.
So many things like this are nice sounding but do not take into consideration that people are going to break laws that they dont agree with. ("That is silly, I can do it and not have a wreck or any other problem, I have been doing it for years") Seatbelt laws are a great example. ("I don't need to wear a seatbelt, it is none of anyone's business") Typically a new law wont work on someone accustomed to doing whatever is being outlawed. (It is the new drivers who dont question "wear your seat belt"; as an example)
I do know that all laws were new at one time. I do not say that every one breaks every or any given law.
We have too many things on the books as illegal and are adding more every day. The more things that are outlawed the more people are controlled. Freedom should have us asking more questions of legislators.
That's fine until you have an accident caused from using a cell phone or texting behind the wheel. Once you involve another person, you have liability issues and that's the problem with it. I agree, there's too many laws, but until we have Tort reform in this country, this is what we have to put up with.
You are not guaranteed NOT to have an accident if you are not texting or I would fully concur. I KNOW most laws are passed with the "greater good" in mind, but life is not always safe. I am not putting this well. I know that. that is why my post was so long. :-)
of course you're not guaranteed a thing except for death and taxes as they say. But you are responsible, and txtg while you drive is dangerous. I just watch a kid drive 1/2 a mile while txtg....he hit the curb twice was driving 30 in a 35 zone in the left lane. I had to get beside him and blow my horn for like 3 seconds before he saw me and put his phone down. He was driving cangerously...period.
Not me ,I don't text while driving ,and I better not see anyone doing it ,cause I'd have to whack em at the next light. I ride my motorcyle ,and have seen many accidents to them and other cars ,people, and property because of distracted driving .When you're in a car,you watch the road ,and keep your hands on the wheel. If you gotta text (calling is much easier) pull over while you do it, you might save someones life.
Like all other bad behaviors, it won't make people change if they might have to pay a fine. What will make it change is if insurance companies will not pay on claims if a texting driver is at fault. That would mean big dollar outlays BY THE INDIVIDUAL in addition to lawyer fees and court costs. Believe me, parents would cut texting off their plans overnight if they passed this law.

Louisiana was one of the first states to outlaw it. Our accident rates went UP.
