Under general welfare. The mess is because of the big corporations wanting all of the government money and the politicians who seek for them to donate to their political campaigns and/or jobs after they are out of office.

If it is followed like the European,Canadian,British,Aus... systems were there is no private health care companies involved it would work great. In these countries higher taxes on smokes and liquor pay for much of the health care, and there is no private health care companies ripping off the citizenry. It is the most fairest and complete system, universal health care.

Because of excessive corporate greed, I agree. I believe Norway has private insurance companies as main providers, they are just heavily regulate, France does have private health insurance that may be purchase to go along with the universal.

Actually we Aussies provide private health care, except they need to compete with our free health care. We also offer tax breaks if you get private care, but the private systems increase their premiums so it often negates this. Private doctors do provide better care than the public ones, but contrary to popular belief, all the doctors are very very well off. I happen to love our medicare, a percentage of my money back after a normal doctor visit, free surgeries, very cheap medicine and our taxes that go into the system aren't high at all.

The administrative costs of Medicare are only about 2% to 3%, and Social Security has, since 1989, been administered for less than 1% annually (even SSD is run for only around 2%), so this myth of government wastefulness in administration is just that.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich was on the O'Reilly Factor this past week and was telling Laura Ingraham (who was standing in for Bill) that, although he voted for ObamaCare, and although it's a solid step in the right direction, he nonetheless lamented that the American people could have had single payer universal Medicare, with no co-pays, no out of pockets, full prescription coverage, full dental, full mental health coverage & etc. for LESS cost.

That's the problem with allowing a for-profit health care industry. People decry single payer as 'communism', but We the People have every right to relegate corporations who deal in health insurance to the sidelines, or to bar them entirely if they are not promoting the general welfare of the nation, just as American cities have every right to (and often do) form their own utility or other companies. Kucinich knows a thing or two about that, too, having been mayor of Cleveland in the 1970s, and having successfully defended its citizens' lower-cost public power company (then 'Muny Light') from ...

We've heard a lot this week about the Commerce Clause and the Taxing and Spending Clause, but we seem to have forgotten the General Welfare Clause, which lies at the heart of it: Private health insurance corporations serve the nation at its citizens' pleasure, in times of good behavior. When they become repugnant or intolerable to the general welfare, they may be restrained or abolished. This idea that these artificial entities have some 'inalienable right' to 'earn a living' (this is what we actually hear, constantly) is just a meme people have been programmed to repeat. Notwithstanding that I (and congressmen like Kucinich) think single payer cheaper, in choosing the best course our citizens' health should be our primary concern; costs secondary, and adhering to some 'purist' political philosophy way, way, way down the list.

You don't have a 401K? 401K people are not generally considered wealthy. They are just trying to have more for retirement. Profit aint so bad. Medicare needs more administrative costs because some of those Medicare providers are raping the system. That is what we expect when the government takes over healthcare. One thing your fire insurance anology gets right is that the fire gets put out/the sick person gets treated, then the terms of the contract get hammered out. That is what happens now. That aint so bad either. Why are we having this discussion? Because you folks hate profit. What we needed was a tune up, what Odumba et. al. gave us was a complete overhaul.

I still think that any health care thing through the government should be controlled as close to the people the plan serves. I am thinking that the hospital districts should be of use here, with perhaps a sales tax levy. Anything so that we can take it out of the sphere of influence of the federal government who really see me as a tax payer and really couldn't care less if i dropped dead in the next few minutes.

Do you think a corporate business will care if you drop dead. They(businessmen) not only not care they will watch you suffer from disease and or injuries, so they don't have to pay the cost, and there have been cases of it happening.

That would be illegal. if you know of something like this you should call and discuss it with some one down at the Securities and Exchange Commission or your state agency in charge of regulating the insurance industry within your state or get a lawyer and sue 'em.

Poor guy. Probably thinks he's educated. Only someone who thinks they're educated would toss education, water, and fire protection willy nilly into a discussion involving the federal government. Or rail against health care insurance profits without saying word one about car insurance profits. Or fail to mention that medicare is the most inflationary area of health care today. I could go on, but once a clown like this decides he's educated, all you can do is pity them.

Medicare is running badly, because they are giving money and not making them(drug companies) bid on who gets to supplies medicare, which they do in the veterans administration. What does car insurance have to do with health care? Police, education, water, and fire protection are all run by the government. Do you really want a businessman decide on what health care you get, when his only concern is profit and the more health care he allows you to have means less money in his pocket.

Who says the VA is run efficiently? It's a perfect example of the care we'll all receive under Obamacare. The worse a vet gets (thus, requiring more stability), the more VA docs transfer them from ward to ward to avoid the paperwork that goes with the vet's death.

The idiot in the video said profits are bad. Car insurance companies also make profits. Why are those profits ok but health insurance profits evil?

Police, education, water, and fire protection are provided by state and local jurisdictions. Obamacare is about the federal jurisdiction. The Constitution says any power not delegated to the Congress is reserved for the people and the states. Ergo, health care should at most be a states issue.

Yes, if I have to choose between a business person I have elected to do business with making my health care decisions WITH me, vs. a bureaucrat being forced on me who makes decisions FOR me, then I want and need the former, not the latter.

"Car insurance companies also make profits. Why are those profits ok but health insurance profits evil?" Because of the way they go about their businesses, when they have to pay high cost to keep someone alive, they delay or deny payment until the person is dead to keep cost low. When have a business person giving you everything the doctor wanted to do.
