This is just one of the reasons. The main reason is I am 60 years old and have always had one. Most people my age do. I rarely use my cell. Don't take my landline away from me!!!!!!!!!

I have NO idea why people still have a landline. Could be: it is a habit? they are familiar? they are cheaper? always had one?

I got rid of mine a couple of years ago. It was strange at first. But got used to it over time.
people landline habit familiar cheaper rid couple years strange

I can't count the number of times I've encountered a call with a customer that went something like this:

CUSTOMER: Help! My cell phone doesn't seem to be working.

REPRESENTATIVE: I'm sorry but you've reached the ___ Department. I recommend contacting Customer Service at 1-800-getalandliine so they can better assist you.

CUSTOMER: But I just told you my cell phone isn't allowing me to make calls.

REPRESENTATIVE: Yes, I understand, Mr./Mrs., Customer. You can reach Customer Service via any land line.

CUSTOMER: But I don't have a land line.

REPRESENTATIVE (feels like saying): Got friends? Family? Neighbors?

REPRESENTATIVE (actually says): In that case, you can click on "Contact Us," and send an email to Customer Service.

I don't own a cell phone, and hope I never do. They have crappy reception, their more expensive, and they're an unnecesary gadget.

Not necessarily, after Katrina, my landline was down for two or three months. We used cell phones. Sometimes there was an overload of calls; but if you kept trying you could get a call through. Everyone was in the same boat.

I don't have a cell, and half the time I don't answer my land line. I despise talking on the phone. I sure don't want people calling me when I'm out. Most of you people yakking on your cell aren't saying anything anyway. This is all you need. line despise talking phone people calling people yakking cell

People should have whatever they want.
For the price of both our cellphones per month, we pay less than the freakin landline before any calls. We've been thinking about dropping the stupid thing and going with Skype.

During a terrible ice storm a few years ago they proved their worth. Couldn't charge the cell phones but the land lines still worked. Our cell phones are mostly for work and having in case of an emergency when away from home.

Telco central offices supply battery power to land line phone service (direct current), not the alternating current supped by your electric utility. That's the reason you won't fry if you drop it in the bath tub while you're spending QT with your rubber duck. A prolonged power outage is also a communications outage with IP telephony. So there ...

19th century brute force technology that works in adverse conditions

Recent ice storm wiped out all power lines across half the state. Power was not restored for 14 days. We have a land line in the kitchen, hard wired, non cordless. It worked, the cell phones didn't

If the power goes out and you can't charge your cell phone you need a phone that works-just in case of an emergency.
