Why on earth do people want to mutilate themselves with tattoos?

It has always seemed kind of primitive to me. When I was a kid and watched TV about primitive peoples I was always a little sickened by what they did to mutilate themselves. Elongating ears and lips, pushing dyes under their skin to make a design and piercing themselves beyond what is reasonable. What a nightmare to wake up beside someone who looked like that.

I like tatoos

There are different reasons for getting a tattoo. Some just want to seem cool. Others want to remember someone and show their bond by having their name as a tattoo. And some just love the creativity that goes into it. I myself have a tattoo of a dragon circling a rose. From that tattoo, I decided what I would name a daughter, should I ever have one.

I agree but I personally find them rather revolting. Don't ask me why it just seems too primitive. But then again, I once viewed a dead body that had tatoos and that was REALLY revolting. The tatoos looked as if magots had been at the body and the flesh sagged so dreadfully around them making what might of once been thought of as art just piles of dirty looking sores.

Ugh. Yikes. After hearing that little back story, I can see why you'd find them so revolting. Just know that not all Tatt's are like that. Some can be quite beautiful, given the chance.

I like tatoos

Personally I find that doing it with paint or makeup is better because you can wash it off and create a whole new masterpiece. But in the end tattoos are a form of expression of both the tattoo artist and the person it's being done on. I see it as a form of art.

Sometimes getting a tatoo is more of a symbol then just blah whatever. But that is usually only sometimes. But if they wish to put it on there skin it is what they want. If you don't like it don't look at it.

A couple here or there are not too bad, but some people go overboard. I think tats and piercings are kinda sexy. I have no tats, but 3 piercings

I like them to an extent, not the full body tats. I admire them, cultrures all over the world decorate themselves with markings that mean something to them or they've earned. It's been this way since the cavemen era. It's not something shameful, unless you get the most rediculous tattoo. Sometimes, they can be so elegant and beautiful. They are like memories, only you share them on the outside.

I consider it decoration. Yeah, it hurts a little when you do it, but it's worth it. It's a form of expression. A way to permanently decorate yourself with the things that matter most to you. Of course, more than a few people go overboard with it, but that's their right too.

Because some people are under the mistaken impression that others will appreciate their 'social statements' or sense of 'art.'

In other words, beats the hell out of me. I do know this much, though: ink on a woman's body is about as big a turn-off as I can imagine.

i have liked tattoos since i was in kindergarden, but didnt want one myself at first... but now i do want one for a few years now, i am designing my tattoo for almost 2 years now.. i want it to mean something philosophical or important ..
but i dont know what i find and like in tattoos

I love tattoos. It's a form of self-expression and a medium for art.
It's not for everyone, but it is for me.
I also find piercings and tattoos attractive (depending on the person and the art).

I try to be careful with words like "primitive", "civilized", "savage", etc... The lines for where one ends and where another begins are too vague. I don't consider it body mutilation at all. It's a form of self expression and it takes a great deal of artistic ability to do.
I think society just needs to time to accept it. People thought of pierced earlobes were barbaric and I bet you don't think anything of them now :) It's likewise with more unconventional peircings and tattoos. People just needs time to get used to it and see it as an art form rather than mutilation.

Tattoos arn't mutilation, the body still looks the same shape. Also just because some peircing arn't fully socially acceptable doesn't mean they arn't reasonable. It's pretty and I'm sorry you can't see the beauty in it and understand the art behind it

Not for myself.But,I've seen some that look good.My ex had a small sun below her belly button to the left (just above her bikini area).Then there are some that go to such extremes that it ruins their appearance
