Why on earth do people want to mutilate themselves with tattoos?

When I see all the tattoos all over the place I immediately think we are reverting to a primitive sort of culture. When I was a kid the pictures of those cultures with multiple piercing, distorted features, and dyes injected under the skin were interesting only by the fact that civilization had not come to them. Now it seems that tattoos even for middle aged women are common. Are they trying to seem cool or young? I once saw a cadaver that had been tattooed and it looked as if maggots had been at it. Do you want your surgeon to come into the OR with tattoos all the way up his arms? I just don't understand I guess. One day it will all look as if you were in a hell of a fight and are bruised.

    Tattoos are cool
Tattoos are walking art and usually express something important to the person wearing them.

And as far as my surgeon... I wouldn't care if he was tattooed from head to toe and had a face full of piercings as long as he could do his job.

    Tattoos are cool
It is no more a mutilation than pierced ears or a nose job. Granted, like everything else, it can be taken to an extreme and for me, moderation is paramount.

I guess I qualify as a middle-aged woman who got a tattoo. However, I first wanted one when I was 20. I decided that, seeing the permanence of one, that I would wait 20 years and if I still wanted one I would get one. I now have a small decorative heart on my inside left ankle. Getting it had nothing to do with trying to seem cool or young any more than getting my ears pierced did. It is decoration.

Does this look like mutilation to you? because it looks like pure beauty to me

    suicide girls

and this is a great symbol of scandinavian heritage looks like art to me

    Mjolnir tattoo

I think you need to go visit a hospital to learn what real mutilation looks like because you obviously don't know.

I don't care what my surgeon has on his body, as long as he knows what he's doing.
Tattoos, when done right, are awesome.
I never understood why people have to go out of their way to hate on tattoos and piercings so much.
If you don't like tattoos or piercings, then don't get one.
    Plain and simple.

    It's only a fad
When I was growing up if you had a tattoo you were either in the Navy or a freak. This generation will be sorry when the fad wears off.

Decades? How old are you? 15? Tattoos were not popular in the 80's except with the Punk crowd.
