Why is today's society more acceptable of lesbians than gays?

I work in a grocery store and we see this type of thing way more than you can imagine. This is the subject of a hot debate with some of my co-workers and I thought I would get some of your opions on the matter.

Just take a look at my point...

A majority of people wouldn't take offense to two women kissing in public but if it we're two men they get all rilled up and think it's disrespectful and gross.

Take it from a member of the gay community.
When I was younger I knew I had feelings for girls, but I didn't act on it because I thought I would be teased for it.

When I was a teenager I was very confused and quiet, often I would come across rather homophobic. I hid my sexuality so deep I started dating boys to fit in.
I was extremely unhappy and felt so abnormal. It wasn't until I left school that my best friend came out to me. It took me a good month before I could tell her I'm also gay.

A person's sexuality IS NOT A CHOICE. I suffered all my life trying to hide my feelings and now deeply regret it, having lost my virginity to a guy and not approaching any girls, not even secretly.

I am now 21, and am in a relationship with my first girlfriend. I have never been happier.

What could possibly be wrong about love between consensual adults? We certainly aren't hurting anyone.

I think lesbians are more "acceptable" than gay males because we live in a patriarchal society. Men's opinions are "more important" than women's, and many straight men like watching women make out. If we lived in a matriarchal society, I think the reverse would be true, because many women enjoy watching men make out.

I mean it's their lives so let them live it. I'm straight but I have friends who aren't but I don't care because my beliefs are only mine. I will happy with what ever they choose because they are my friends and i love them.

I rarely see such things and when I do, I react the same way as if they were heterosexual. Public displays of affection are fine, but I don't have to watch. I'm really not into it.

..And yes I do think lesbian women are more accepted in society than gay men. I think as a child it is accepted that girls hold hands and have sleep overs. But boys cannot show any affection accept maybe a slap on the back or a friendly hug. I think the buck stops there.

If parents are concerned about what their children are subjected to (in terms of sexuality), they need to understand that it is a growing part of society, and it WILL NOT affected the child's sexuality in later life. Remember SEXUALITY IS NOT A CHOICE!

Alright, was there a lot of men in this society? Watching lesbians kiss and connect is hot to us. It's just something with us :D

Anyway, yeah we think it looks better two women kissing then two men. Something in our chromosones or something\

Still, it may be hot, but I have no acceptability with gay's or fruitylooms, or blood elves >.< yeah women kissing chromosones hot acceptability gays fruitylooms blood elves

The reason, in today's society, lesbians have, to an extent, become more acceptable than gay men is because a large portion of society, typically men, have incorporated girl on girl sexuality into their sexual fantasies.

Personally, I don't care what anyone's sexual preference is unless they're someone I'm interested in dating.

Lesbians seem to be more acceptable because they are seen as sexual objects to men. It's disgusting, really. Personally I would rather see two gay people making out than two straight people. :P

I hate having to explain to my kids why people are doing it when we go to Seattle. It is easier to cover their eyes and walk down the street than it is to have to explain why!

Kids are exposed to this and yet the gay community forces it on the public. Go back to the closets please!

Society has taken some small steps closer to getting over itself. The current generation is traditional and never learned to accept difference, but the future generation is more inclined to be accepting. The double-standard point you highlighted is an example of disgusting hypocrisy.

In todays world the media, TV, movies and the like potray it as a normal life style. And the younger generation has grown up believing that it is!

No! Kids misunderstand and get the wrong idea that it's a choice before they are old enough to really understand what life is all about.

Boy I guess that last bottle of wine did me in. I corrected the statement above.

The media and or the entertainment industry today portrays homosexuality as a normal life style and I think kids get the idea that it is a choice they can make in their lives like choosing a career or a religion.

And with that statement we somewhat agree it is a lifestyle not a choice, but it certainly is not normal.

I think so at least in a physiological aspect, two arms, two legs, ten toes, ten fingers and the like is normal. Just as a male and female are attracted to one another and drawn together to procreate and carry on their species that’s normal, not Harry and Fred or Mary and Grace being attracted to one another and drawn together by the emotion of love just to have sex.
