Why is breastfeeding in public looked down on in the US?

Because dumbass men and lesbians think it's only for them and not for a lovely baby who needs it.

Because people have over-sexualised breasts and now it's considered inappropriate to show them in public, despite the gross amount of overweight men walking around shirtless with breasts bigger than a lot of girls I know.

How is it possible for a country to be so prudish, yet so smutty at the same time?

Because men are perverts we look at the breast as a sex organ first and never ever think of it as something to provide nutrition.

It's natural. It's not exactly demeaning to the human race, but it's not something people want to see you do. When a woman just suddenly starts breastfeeding her baby in a public place, it makes strangers feel like they are intruding on a private bonding moment between mother and child. Go somewhere more secluded or pump bottles of your breast-milk to feed your child when going somewhere instead of removing your shirt to give strangers who may or may not be having innocent thoughts an eyefull and then causing most people to feel like they should go somewhere else to give you and your baby the privacy you need. Most mothers I know breastfeed, and every one of them would rather not do it in front of people who have no business witnessing it.

so is sex, a totally natural and crucial part of life.

I don't know. It's ridiculous how many times I was told to go to " the bathroom" to nurse my daughters even though I was covered. Would they feed THEIR kid in a nasty ass bathroom? I think NOT.

It's not demeaning; the US has had some strange ideas about nature and sex.
As for bottle or breast, it should always be the choice of the individual.

If the issue is whether you breastfeed in public or not, then the argument is void. There are several places you can breastfeed while out (certain women's stores, restrooms at restaurants, coffee shops etc.) Another option is to use a pump at home and use a bottle (with your own milk) while in public. Basically, the argument is over whether you want to show your tit in public or not. Personally, if you want to whip it out, I'm probably going to look.

If that makes me an "ignorant butthole" then so be it.
