Not all blood is blue inside of your body. It's actually blue and red. Red blood is oxygenated blood which flows in your ateries and away from your lungs. Blue blood is blood which has given up its oxygen and and travels in your veins back to your lungs to pick up more oxyen. The reason blood turns red outside of your body is because it is absorbing oxygen from the air.

It's only blue on the return trip. Lack of Oxygen causes the blood to appear blue. When you cut yourself, the blood cells absorb oxygen from the air

Oh god, how painful. Study biology? But basically, oxygenated blood is red and otherwise it's blue. Blood goes through the lungs, becomes oxygenated, then travels through the body providing oxygen to your cells.

True. At its least oxygenated, it's a purplish-red >.> As opposed to bright red. But it's called "blue" anyway ;)

Interesting answers, but I don't think blood is ever blue. I agree blood that is not oxygenated is darker, but it is very dark red, might appear purplish or bluish, but it is still red, and I think we are just talking different shades of red.

Exactly,it just looks like that through your veins.
Blood already has oxygen in it,if it didn't you would die.

What's really interesting is the difference between 'blue bloods' and the 'red blooded' rest of us. The blue bloods are blue bloods because they never spill their blood. Think about it.

Only half the blood in your body is blue. That occurs when it is De-oxygenated. Oxygen causes blood to be red, which is why its red when you bleed.

Blood is not blue at anytime, unless your a horseshoe crab. Blood is generally a darker shade of red inside the body and turns lighter as the iron in the blood oxidizes on contact with air. Oxygenated blood in the body is slightly lighter but still dark compared to when it leaves the body.

Blood is never blue. When blood is in your body, it's dark red, and when it comes in contact with oxygen, it turns a lighter shade of red. You can tell because when a doctor or nurse draws blood with a syringe, you can look in it and see the blood is red. Since a good, quality syringe won't have oxygen in it, you are looking at blood that hasn't come in contact in oxygen.

You have both kinds in your circulatory system. Blood going to the lungs is blue (no oxygen), blood exiting the lungs is red (oxygenated).

    arterial blood is oxygenated
    vein blood is blue

    Howz that?

Blood is a darker shade of red when it is in the vein on it's way back to the lungs but it is never blue. I've done enough venipunctures into syringes or tubes that have no oxygen in them to know. The blood is dark red. When you do an arterial stick it is a brighter red but never blue.
