Fear is only healthy and useful trait as long as the thing we fear can be approached logically and rationally in order to move past or around it.

Paranoia suggests fears that people are unable to do either and so end up trapped in a cycle of irrationality, fearing everything and being unable to do anything.

Ultimately they back themselves into a psychological corner - and we all know when you back anything into a corner, they are a danger to themselves and others.

Paranoia is a tool that was given to us. In Different times in life different dangers may approach such as a rabid dog or someone wants to kill you. Being paranoid can save your life by allowing your senses to be on a heightened alert.

I prefer to call it maintaining an elevated state of situational awareness. It sounds better than paranoid. Not always a bad thing depending on where you are and how many are out to get you. LOL

Paranoia is a form of self-absorption and self-obsession, and is a very sure way to misery and suffering.

A certain amount of caution is definitely a good thing, but once it crosses into the boundary of irrational paranoia, and starts interfering with your life and causes you to make poor decisions, it becomes a bad thing. bear traps guns bathtub tinfoil hat

It prevents one from being happy regardless of other circumstances. Think Howard Hughes. It can also result in mindless harm to others, or, in the cases of some political pundits, encouragement of harmful actions.

You're not paranoid if they are really after you.

It can make you ill at ease sometimes, but actually it can be a very GOOD thing too, it is good to be cautious about people, I am, and it serves me well!

While some fear is normal and helps protect us, paranoia is like fear on crack. Too much fear and anxiety for too long can be a mental health issue and lead us to the wrong conclusions about reality. (e.g. "Everyone is out to get me.")

Wikipedia has a blurb on it too:
Paranoia is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of irrationality and delusion.

Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory beliefs, or beliefs of conspiracy concerning a perceived threat towards oneself. (e.g. "Everyone is out to get me.")

Making false accusations and the general distrust of others also frequently accompany paranoia. For example, an incident most people would view as an accident or coincidence, a paranoid person might believe was intentional.

Paranoia is an 'irrational fear', giving the host great anxiety, perhaps even to the point of physical discomfort. So, being sick or constantly in an anxious state is not a 'good thing'; not to mention that having a distorted view of reality is not really such a good thing either.

You don't want to confuse paranoia with cynicism or caution. From my very limited understanding of such things, paranoids don't process information properly. They sort of live in a fantasy world where everyone is out to get them in some way.

I think conspiracy kooks live there, too. They're able to construct elaborate fantasies to "explain" such far-fetched things because they don't spend any time in Reality with the rest of us.

Usually YES. It is good to be aware of your surroundings but being Paranoid takes it to another level that messes with your calm.
