Why exactly do some people like to bring up age into an argument? Am I stupid because I'm 15? Seriously?

666_Maggots~PassionForGlory BN-1 2012/05/18 22:04:17
I was in a discussion with this person on here and he basically says my opinions are obsolete because of my age. This has happened multiple times and it's honestly pathetic. So if I was older would my opinions matter more? Why?

u guys r all right in a way and dont worry coz u all will do it too im 39 and my oldest girl is 15 and we often have arguements but I rarely rely on her age to win because sometime i think she is smarter than me and we teach our kids that if they are going to argue to make sure that have all their facts together so that their point makes sense because thats where most kids lose the parent stop understanding what hell it is that you are trying to say

Age is just an illusion much like time. However, most of the adults we see today are used to being judged by age. it just depends on the experiences they've had and in what way they understood those experiences. All i can say is if someone doesn't respect you while speaking then move along. They're a waist of "time" and air.

I am 19 right now, I have had the same view points on everything for just about ever now. Many of my elders respect my opinion and that is what its all about. It is a stupid stereotype thing. We are young so we cause trouble, break the law, and do drugs. I don't exactly do any of that. I had once been stopped by a local police officer because he was assuming that I was trying to break in the school because I was on the swings at the school park. What? He was swearing at me and yelling as soon as he saw me, For swinging. I asked him if he wanted to either fight with me about it, or if he wanted to talk to my step-dad about it. He said "fu*k your step-dad, you are going to listen to me," I said "I said fu*k you and listen to me, you will be talking to him tomorrow at the office, because I'm sure that the police lieutenant is going to want to have a word with you after I let him know how you were acting." The lieutenant is my step-dad and the officer is no longer in that department. The point is that be yourself, stick with your opinion since its as good as any other.

Age is only a factor if the responses are immature. You presented a valid argument in a mature way. Tell em to f**k off

It's because they are clearly losing the argument so they attempt to patronise their younger opponent.
In such situations you could try using the counter argument, that they are obviously so far out of touch with modern society, as to render their views on the subject redundant.

agists, as i have come to call them, were simply dumb-asses when they were young. since they are so super special today they can't fathom the thought of anyone under 40 having anything valuable come out of their head. what's sad is i've had the same crap because "i'm only 25". get used to it as you have another 10 years of retarded age remarks to put up with. but ya, it's their way of saying when they were your age they were altogether stupid.

My mind is open to other viewpoints, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have to agree with them. I was brought up to stand for what I believe in and that means changing for none and only changing if I truly want to. I'm not changing my religion just because someone wants to marry me. They either accept it or I'll find better. If I give up who I am I'm basically giving up on me.

I'm not stubborn, just strong willed in my opinions. I only change if necessary to me and as long as I stay true to myself. There is nothing wrong with me being
myself and having my own opinions. Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean what I say is unimportant. I hold high value in my personal morals and I would find it unhonorable to think otherwise. But I can accept others and respect that.

It's not that your opinions would matter more, but rather the other speaker would give them more relevance since you would then presumably have had enough life experience (for them) to "know what you're talking about".

At 15, you haven't had to do many of the things someone 2 or 3 times your age has; and that's where the "you don't know what you're talking about" comes in.

How would you feel if a 10 year old started telling you that "you're a moron and you have no idea how the world works"? You'd be pissed, right? This kid, that didn't exist until 10 years ago, is going to "educate you on life".

Don't worry about it, there will come a time when you will be able to say the same thing to someone younger than yourself.

I never told him he didn't know what he was talking about. He disagreed with me on a question involving religion and I explained my stand on it. I never told anyone they didn't know what they were talking about. I have no problem with people disagreeing with me. It's just I hate when people write me off for differing but when I agree I'm oh so very smart.

(you very well may have struck a nerve, and indeed; your age was the only thing they could "attack you" on)

Many people (especially on here) assume they "know what you mean" (or thought).
    Ignore 'em.

Your opinions ARE NOT obsolete BUT as any of us older folks can tell you, age and experience provide a broad pallet of experience that helps decision making... It was ALSO hard for all of us oldies to understand that when we were 15 too and that's a nice reminder to share with those who give you grief...
