Why do you think YOU deserve respect, When you don't give respect in first place? Do you think you are special?

Respect in the form of basic human decency, should be given to all up front. Respect for other people's rights and feelings, stuff like that. Anything beyond that needs to be earned.

    Yes. I am special.
But then, so is everybody else.

    you are special

God's eye is on the sparrow.
"Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing?
and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows."

Every human being, of whatever origin, of whatever station, deserves respect. We must each respect others even as we respect ourselves.

One must first have self respect in order to respect anybody else.

    Respect is EARNED, not given.

I deserve respect, simply for the fact, I DO provide it to others. However, I do believe there are certain times, when you don't know someone, that their position demands respect either way, such as when in a court room addressing a judge. Once you are disrespectful though, you shouldn't be so ignorant as to believe you're entitled to respect.

If you provide it to others, you have earned it.

True enough, but I think at times, it doesn't necessarily have to be 'earned' so long as the other person isn't rude and disrespectful, respect should be an expectation in some cases(in my opinion)

Respect is always earned not just given. I understand what you are saying when it should be an expectation in some cases. For some professions, it should be shown simply because of the profession. However, someone in that profession has earned the respect they should be given simply by reaching that level. Earning it doesn't necessarily mean they have ever come into contact with the person from which it should be shown.

Never thought of it that way. Good point. I was thinking more on an individual and personal basis.

I'll use police as an example. Unless proven otherwise, and there are bad police officer just like there are bad in any profession, I feel they have earned respect simply because they put their life on the line. Even the ones I have never met.
