Why do women remove hair from their pits and nether regions?

I asked my wife this same question and she replied "Why, I do it for you dear." I told her that I would rather she not do it for me. However, she continues to depilate. So, I know it must not be for me. Maybe she does it for the mailman?
So, I did a little research. I thought there had to be a simple explanation. "Hygiene" I'm thinking, probably in the olden days when water and soap wasn't as plentiful and good perhaps it came in style. But, as near as I can tell, it all came about as kind of an after thought type of thing. They used the hygiene spiel as a cover-up to explain why they had removed pit-hair from a photo-shoot.
The hygiene argument is out of the question. There is nothing hygienic about it. Especially in this day and age. And with the prices of everything going through the roof, women being more empowered and embracing who they are plus everybody focusing on what is natural... You would think we would start to see a lot more hairy women on the streets.
So, that is my question for today:

Sure, in part it is to be more appealing to the guys, at least with the pits (I've yet to find one I'd show my nether regions). Mostly I do it because I like it better. Feels cleaner, is less itchy(though you've got to stay on top. Pubic stubble down low is one of the most irritating feelings in the world). Also, smooth legs feel awesome. I shave them all the time, and I'm rarely out of jeans. - Michelle Luna 2011/11/13 00:48:55None of the above+1i go back and forth between waxing various parts and then letting them grow in. this year ive grown in my legs and armpits, and bush (sometimes use clippers to shorten but not to the skin), and i still shave my forearms. ive reclaimed so much extra shower and date-prep time that was wasted before, and no more pain from chronic ingrowns. i love it!reply

I've had a German women stick her hairy arm in my face on a plane putting her bag up and it was horrible. Men's underarms smell much more than a womens.reply

As far was the lower region .... have you seen a woman in a bikini with spider legs coming out of the crotch ..... NOT a pleasant sight ..... When I seen that I was like OMG I will be swimming with lose pubes "Shudders" needless to say that was the end of my public pool days I was scarred for life

How many hair products, dyes, shampoos, conditioners, sprays and appliances of one sort or another. Make up products, listing would take all day. Then the matter of clothing and shoes.
