Why do some people get mad if you correct their spelling or grammar?

I admit, I don't have the best spelling or grammar but I try my best at least. When someone corrects my spelling or grammar, I usually thank them. If someone is doing it in a nice way, I don't see anything wrong with it.

I can only deduct it to their lack of humility. I live in the south and if I took the time to correct every single person, who used double negatives or people who still don't know when to use "Anything" or "Nothing" in a sentence, I'd be wasting my time.

I try to take corrections as graciously as I can. But there's a way to correct people and there's a way you don't. So the way you say it could equate to the way they take it.

English is a beautiful language, if spoken correctly. But my problem is that people are set in their ways no matter how incorrect they are. It isn't ignorance that is plaguing the world it's tolerance. So many people have come accustom to the blatant misuse of grammar and spelling that when someone calls them on it, they're appalled.

I'm not perfect at spelling or grammar (who is) but if I'm not speaking/spelling something correctly tell me! We should all be like children when it comes to corrections.

Because it makes them either feel stupid or they think you think you are superior.

Because this is not school and some make mistakes for various reasons, like typo or tired but what does it matter as long as you understand what the other person has written..

I understand that but some people just don't know how to use proper grammar or correct spelling.

Trying to help someone isn't having a sad life. Some people should learn that they aren't going to get a job with bad spelling or grammar. Job applications, resumes, essays for college or jobs, if they find one spelling or grammar mistake, they will just throw it away.

this is not a job interview...it is an opinion site ...i rarely use capitals, should i be shot, we have had questions re; grammar nazis and the majority of people on here hate them....

I never said it was. My point was some people don't know how to use proper grammar and they will be in for a rude awakening when they try to apply for a job. You should use proper grammar when on an opinion site. I don't really notice you because you usually use pretty good grammar. Some people make mistakes and other people are just ignorant.

That is a very good point. Sadly, texting and things like that have not helped young people in the spelling or grammar department. I remember when I worked in Internet advertising, one of the big wigs would always mess up when writing anything with their, they're or there and everyone would always snicker when he'd send out a memo. I am actually a language arts teacher and try to get the importance of developing good grammar, spelling and punctuation skills across to students to help prepare them for college and the real world.

I don't usually use WTF or any text abbreviations. I have a qwert keyboard though, I did when I had an abc keyboard.

I have only very rarely used that. What is a qwert keyboard? I am always very careful on Facebook because most of my "friends" are former students.

If you really suck at spelling a word, spell check won't work. Sodahead doesn't have a spell check, Firefox and Google Chrome do though.

If Sodahead had a spell check, Sodahead probably wouldn't be underlined as misspelled.

I'm usually the person correcting other's spelling and grammar. I try to do it in the nicest way possible because, well, I hate it when people get mad at me. But I'm also a stickler from proper English.

Cause most of the time people take it the wrong way. You said something very important. "If someone is doing it in a nice way" most people don't. I will admit I have very bad grammar and spelling. So I tend to get some pretty nasty people commenting about it. Sometimes it's just better to hold your tongue.
