Why do so many Americans fear same sex marriage?

What possible effect could same sex marriages have on society as a whole. My own marriage will not be affected at all. There are just many benefits to being married that do not come with a civil union. I remind that many countries already have same sex marriage with no consequenses> Canada passed same sex marriage laws in 2005.

They don't want equal protection for gays

They do not care about our rights.

They allow religion to dictate their view

You assume just because someone objects to it, that they must fear it.
Not the case. For myself, I just don't want the English language bastardized any further than it already is. Marriage is one man and one woman. Homosexuals are welcome to civil unions and all the financial benefits associated therewith (since it always comes back to money).

Americans have done a very good job of chopping up the language already so I would not worry too much about that. If they can't learn how to spell they just changed the spelling. The whole world writes the date with the day/month/year but Americans insister on month/day/year . If the whold world thinks marriage is a legal contract between two people then I think we could get used to that. The Canadians seem to have done OK at it.

Yes I heard some wag say that before. I am so grateful to be among the lucky ones whose marriage was been very happy. I can't imagine what life would have been without my partner. I don't want to deny anyone that.

Yes, I remember when Paul McCartney was asked about his successful marriage to his first wife, Linda. He said it was just luck that they found each other and had grown together. I think too I was lucky to find just the right husband, and father for my children.
