Why do people think "vulgar" words are offensive?

There are some words that I prefer not to hear come out of peoples mouths.. some are very degrading and if said around me, they might get knocked on their ass....It isnt the word itself, it is the meaning of those words....

I don't need to use certain words to convey my meaning. Those words are socially unacceptabe for many people, and I have no reason to offend people. Good manners reflect your true character.

There are behaviors, including language, that reflect trashiness and a ghetto state of mind. Flipping people off and letting fly with F Bombs says alot about your character. If you want people to think of you in that way, then fine. Your call. It matters not what you think about those words. They are socially unacceptable and are not used in civil discourse.

I find some words offensive when they are not used as profanity at all. Things like 'bless you' 'God be with you'

It is all in the perspective of the person.

I don't use them unless I am pissed off because I don't have a need to, but others use it to be "cool." But I don't find them offensive.

I am sure that people have said things to you that offended you.. I have seen your reactions to some of them...
But, after all they are Just words

From a psyciatrists point of view:

Profanity just means you do not know enough words to be able to say what you want without using curse words - an educated person can cut you down to nothing without saying one "dirty" word at all.

when guys cuss, they are probably just trying to be macho. really, they look stupid.
when girls, it makes them look extremely trashy, and tacky.

That is your opinion.. however it doesnt stand up to what society and the rest of the world thinks..... I prefer to listen to intelligent conversation, not one filled with every other word being a 4 letter word because the person cant carry on a decent non profane converstaion...
