Why do people make such a big deal about not having an avatar of yourself on here?

I was having a conversation regarding grammar, and for some reason I get this: "You move along. At least some of us don't have to hide behind a false picture. I guess you are not very proud of who you are or what you look like, if you were, you would show your face, or is it so ugly that you yourself can not even fix your own hair in the mirror with out crying at how ugly you are." Hmmph, I must say, I'm not going to be winning any beauty pageants, but I am most certainly not ugly.

I can see why some people would not want to reveal their identity online. There are some crazy people who frequent the internet after all. As for me, I really do not care if people know who I am and what I look like, so I have pictures of myself up. It is much easier to be bold when you are a male though. Young ladies are a prime target for perverts and wierdos.

Cause they have nothing better to do. I don't like the way I show up in pictures. That's why I don't use my own pic. Besides, Shigure looks way better than me. :)

They want you to join their troll clique, and pictures are their currency. Many of us do not want to be trollbait and have secret identities, therefore posting pictures would be rather foolish! I'd personally rather see a picture of an object than a person- it's much more telling. My personal appearance does not need to accompany every post I make. I have mentioned my appearance on here already.

Haha I want to know who you're talking about in your posts. You should msg me.

Also, I think that you used to have photos of yourself up- right? They were not ugly.

I dunno...I think I someone said that to me once as well. Avatars are just cooler than personal photos; it's a chance to express our uniqueness through creativity. Some SodaHead'ers need to just get a life...

I don't use my real picture as an avatar for any of the sites I'm a member of because I don't personally know any of the people on those sites. It's a safety issue, not a beauty issue. I don't have a problem with the way I look, but Spike is probably a lot more pleasant to look at than I am.

in my opinion it is silly to have an avitar. At the same time, i really dont care either way and that person who insulted you in such a way just didnt know how else to get back at you for winning the origional arguement.

It's not a big deal to me. I don't have my own picture on SH. It's not that I don't like the way I look. I look pretty fine in my own opinion. I consider it a matter of safety. I'd rather not have my real face out there since we don't always know who we're really talking with on SH. And, some of the people on SH are really nuts, I mean really over the top, unstable and sometimes vicious. I don't want them tracking me down somehow.

I don't understand how people think that if someone who uses a "false" avatar they're suddenly considered ugly. That's so illogical it'd be funny if it wasn't so stupid.

Frankly it's your business if you show your actual face or not. After a while I just assume people actually look like their avatar and leave to sip my tea. Illogical? Yep. But slightly better than thinking everyone's butt ugly.

I don't get it either, You don't even know if their "real" avatar is really them. Not to mention real pictures are boring, I would rather and I think most people would rather see a pretty or awesome picture.

That jerk! Some people prefer the feeling of anonymity an avatar brings. Plus, it just shows off more of our likes/dislikes through it. Like for me. I like both Jack Sparrow and One Piece. Pirates in general really. So that's why I chose my pic. I'm not insecure about my looks. That person needs to stop making assumptions like this. It's very rude.

I don't use a picture of myself for privacy reasons. Hell, the picture I use on my facebook and twitter profiles isn't a picture of me, either. I don't necessarily want the whole world knowing who 'this' is. Again, privacy.

Besides, this being the internet, how would you really know I am who I say I am?
