Why do homosexuals call themselves "Gay"?

I was born in 1971 and my Mama named me after both of my Grandmothers. One's first name was "Edith" and the other's middle name was "Gay" so.....Guess what my name is......Yep....."Edith Gay"! My Mama gave me this wonderful name because she loved me.

About the time I started going to school is when the word "Gay" started to turn from something beautiful into the perversion that it is today. Why??? Just so homo's can feel better about their lifestyle??

Sure...I could change my name, but why should I have to? My name is a tribute to 2 of this world's greatest people.

Why can't they just pick a different word? Like....sick, twisted, demoralized, corrupt, atrocious, disgusting, depraved. Anything but "Gay"!

And don't tell me to "get over it"......I have tried for 30 years to get over it. It is so sad that I have to feel ashamed of this name that my Mama gave me out of love. Why did they have to pick such a beautiful word to describe their depraved lifestyle?
You!

Amen girlfriend. It enrages me that they use everything with a wonderful meaning for there unnatural relationship. Like the rainbow( GOD's promise), the butterfly ( if you have a tattoo of one everyone assumes you are queer.) If they chose to be queer then that is their choice but dont try to turn our beautiful world and words into something they are not to make them feel better about themselves. And dont even get me started on the right for them to get married. Why would they even want to, that is something you are suppose to do in the eyes of the LORD, and if you are clearly going to go against him why would you want to do anything relating to him. But the Lord also says that I should not judge so I always treat others with the respect they deserve and love them as I would anyone else. But that doent mean I have to like or agree with their ways.

because english has the widest vocabulary in the world and we have lots of words for the same things.

this is yet another stupid argument for why gay people are bad. i´m still waiting for evidence that there is anything wrong with them.

Why must they use the word "Gay"? That was the question!

they must use it because it´s part of the language. they can´t just pretend the word doesn´t exist. they are referred to as gay, hence they are gay. it´s not that big of a linguistic dilemma.

They could refer to themselves with any word, why did they have to pick "Gay"? What part of the question did you not understand??? They could have chosen words like...sick, twisted, demoralized, corrupt, atrocious, disgusting, depraved.

well, they are none of that, so that wouldn´t make sense... again, still looking for this proof that they are bad. tick tock.

None that I have met are "happy & joyful" either, so the word "Gay" does not apply to them. Why can't they just call it what it is.....sick, twisted, demoralized, corrupt, atrocious, disgusting, depraved.

If you are going to keep replying to this blog....Please answer the question. It's really simple: "Why do homosexuals call themselves "Gay"? You have not answered the question yet!

There are millions of words that they could have used....why did they pick that one?? "Gay" does not even apply to them.

like i said, language has a way of evolving, and it might have started associating gay (happiness) to the flamboyant homosexuals. that´s just a theory of mine.

i looked up the etymology of the word...

1178, "full of joy or mirth," from O.Fr. gai "gay, merry" (12c.); cf. O.Sp. gayo, Port. gaio, It. gajo. Ultimate origin disputed; perhaps from Frank. *gahi (cf. O.H.G. wahi "pretty"), though not all etymologists accept this. Meaning "brilliant, showy" is from c.1300. OED gives 1951 as earliest date for slang meaning "homosexual" (adj.), but this is certainly too late; gey cat "homosexual boy" is attested in N. Erskine's 1933 dictionary of "Underworld & Prison Slang;" the term gey cat (gey is a Scot. variant of gay) was used as far back as 1893 in Amer.Eng. for "young hobo," one who is new on the road and usually in the company of an older tramp, with catamite connotations. But Josiah Flynt ["Tramping With Tramps," 1905] defines gay cat as, "An amateur tramp who works when his begging courage fails him." Gey cats also were said to be tramps who offered sexual services to women. The "Dictionary of American Slang" reports that gay (adj.) was used by homosexuals, among themselves, in this sense since at least 1920. Rawson ["Wicked Words"] notes a male prostitute using gay in reference to male homosexuals (but a...'""""""

Rawson ["Wicked Words"] notes a male prostitute using gay in reference to male homosexuals (but also to female prostitutes) in London's notorious Cleveland Street Scandal of 1889. Ayto ["20th Century Words"] calls attention to the ambiguous use of the word in the 1868 song "The Gay Young Clerk in the Dry Goods Store," by U.S. female impersonator Will S. Hays. The word gay in the 1890s had an overall tinge of promiscuity -- a gay house was a brothel. The suggestion of immorality in the word can be traced back to 1637. Gay as a noun meaning "a (usually male) homosexual" is attested from 1971.

I wouldn't expect homosexuals to be happy and joyful around a homophobic bigot such as yourself. We are calling it what it is; gay.

My question was......Why do they call themselves "Gay"? There are many other words they could have chosen that would better describe their depraved lifestyle.

It's not a depraved lifestyle, it's just the way some people are born. Others, like you are born normal but are later convinced that certain minorities are bad. I just answered your question, I said we're calling it what it is. Gay.
