Why do dogs stick out their tongues while they sleep?

Now my dog does this even when she's awake, and it's not in a gesture of panting. She'll be sitting and looking me with her tongue peeking out of her mouth. I'm sure if you have a dog you know what I'm talking about.

Besides being cute (and knowing that they are!!), Dogs regulate their body temp through their tongue and the pads of their feet.

Dogs are kind of like Volkswagen Beetles and the rest of us mammals are like the GM Muscle cars. In other words, dogs have a sort of air cooling system and the tongue hanging out is part of it ... alright, you know what ? I lied. The do it cause they're just so cute.

Their tongues when relaxed are much longer than their mouths? I'm guessing.

No, I'm not talking about when they are panting, it's when they have only a portion of their tongue sticking out. It may be only smaller breeds but My dog will just be sitting there staring at me with her tongue partially sticking out but her mouth is still closed.

yeah, they still have to venilate. Cats don't needto do this, because they sweat through their paws. The major blood vessel in a dog's head runs very close to the surface of its nose. The fresh air a dog breathes works like a fan to cool the blood in the nose, which then circulates through the dog's body to cool the rest of the body. The dog then exhales the warm air out its mouth.

My cat does it too. My dog has only started doing it as he has hit the twilight years. I think it is more than ventilation. I

I have chihuahua, same thing here. Just the tip of his tongue sticking out. I think he uses it for a temp-gauge... Mostly when he is just relaxing around the house.

Purebred Chihuahuas just have their tongue sticking out, it's part of the traits of the breed. When a chihuahua is truly purebred, their tongues will stick out to the side. It has nothing to do with panting, or ventilating, it is just part of the dog breed. My mother had a teacup, and it's tongue was never in its mouth, ever.
