A Liberal education is one that exposes one to many points of view. The word liberal comes from "liberty" the ability to think for one's self. The USA was founded on very liberal ideals for the time. The conservative ideal was NOT to change, and not to declare our independence. We were founded on the "liberal" idea that "all men were created equal". The conservative ideal was that some men were created better than others and therefore were given the right to rule over others by the grace of God.
The modern definitions of the two political (but not semantic) words are:
Liberal= to think freely
Conservative=resistance to change
As a teacher for over 40 years, education changed when we were required to teach to the "test". It also allowed many teachers to become mini dictators and allow no discussion as to the validity of what was being taught as fact.

The knowledge of history keeps us form repeating the same mistakes. There are many things that are paramount to the use of of knowledge that we learned in school. Especially those of us that were educated in the period before 1970. We had teachers that thought it was important to use your own mind. They honored you for that. Why did this change?

Trade unionism was the death knell to quality production and service as unionism existed to preserve the jobs, benefits and pay solely for its members without any consideration for quality of outcome. When employees no longer have to compete everybody works with minimal effort.
If the teacher attended a university these places were already infested with people who could never work anywhere else. People unable to compete for jobs are naturally attracted to government fixes no matter what the ultimate consequences may be.
Throughout the 50's you were encouraged to think for yourself. Or at least, you were asked, "What do YOU think?" Toward the end of the 60's we were on the fast track to socialism, liberalism and every other ism you can come up with.
But the question asked, is WHY? That I don't know for sure. It could have had a lot to do with the aftermath of World War II. There was such a shift in attitudes after staying alive by the skin of your teeth. I have an idea but I don't know how to word it.........
Facism/Nazism, like Communism are based on Karl Marx's theories and that means they are Leftist.
Marxism/Communism/Fascism/Nazism are all totalitarian in nature.
As soon as you can tell me how much better it was to be arrested and tortured by the KGB than the Gestapo, I might think you know what your are talking about. As soon as you can tell me how much luckier the 15 million Ukrainians, killed by Stalin during the winter of 1932-1933 were than the 13 million killed in Hitler's camps, again, I might think that you know what you are talking about.
Two of the greatest evils of the 20th century came out of Marx's theories. So what is the problem.

I was really amazed when I visited Barbados a few years ago. The poorest of the poor spoke better English than a lot of college graduates that I have known.
