Why did education go liberal?

The knowledge of history keeps us form repeating the same mistakes. There are many things that are paramount to the use of of knowledge that we learned in school. Especially those of us that were educated in the period before 1970. We had teachers that thought it was important to use your own mind. They honored you for that. Why did this change?

    A Liberal education is one that exposes one to many points of view. The word liberal comes from "liberty" the ability to think for one's self. The USA was founded on very liberal ideals for the time. The conservative ideal was NOT to change, and not to declare our independence. We were founded on the "liberal" idea that "all men were created equal". The conservative ideal was that some men were created better than others and therefore were given the right to rule over others by the grace of God.
    The modern definitions of the two political (but not semantic) words are:
    Liberal= to think freely
    Conservative=resistance to change

    As a teacher for over 40 years, education changed when we were required to teach to the "test". It also allowed many teachers to become mini dictators and allow no discussion as to the validity of what was being taught as fact.

    Those can do; those who can't teach.

    -George Bernard Shaw

    Trade unionism was the death knell to quality production and service as unionism existed to preserve the jobs, benefits and pay solely for its members without any consideration for quality of outcome. When employees no longer have to compete everybody works with minimal effort.

    If the teacher attended a university these places were already infested with people who could never work anywhere else. People unable to compete for jobs are naturally attracted to government fixes no matter what the ultimate consequences may be.

    The conservatives went to make money and let the mamby pamby liberals that weren't good with their hands or brains do the teaching. We need to take the schools back from them, public schools and colleges are liberal training camps.

    Fortunately, I had a conservative education in the Public setting. Without the liberal garbage, it has consistently won the Blue Ribbon of Excellence.

    As I remember it, we came out of the 50's a little more risque than we went in. But the 60's was the start of in-your-face-liberalism. Free love and drugs.....(the 60's were the most filthy dirty period....I hated it!)

    Throughout the 50's you were encouraged to think for yourself. Or at least, you were asked, "What do YOU think?" Toward the end of the 60's we were on the fast track to socialism, liberalism and every other ism you can come up with.

    But the question asked, is WHY? That I don't know for sure. It could have had a lot to do with the aftermath of World War II. There was such a shift in attitudes after staying alive by the skin of your teeth. I have an idea but I don't know how to word it.........

    I think I can answer my own question. After WWll The people that taught us had relatives or neighbors that were in the war. Later people became doubters that couldn't relate to it. the end result the disbelievers started teach what they believed, What do you think of that?

    Sounds reasonable to me. I actually watched it happen........meaning I was completely aware of what was happening, but I didn't know how to project it into the future, if that makes sense.

    It hasn't gone Liberal at all. Actually, I went to Catholic school for the 8 yrs, and there was never a word about the Bible or this Creationism drivel. There was Mass at 8 and the rest was school. Never the twain shall meet. Teachers had a strong union, as did most occupations, were well paid and well respected. The GI Bill paid for college, and the there was a 91% tax on those making over $250,000, I believe. And that was Republican. Then slowly but surely, the whole thing started slipping to the right, toward Fascism.

    Thanks for your opinion. When I was little, my girl friend left public school for Catholic school. I was amazed that her textbooks were the same as mine but each had an extra section on religion.

    I'm not doubting you at all. However, I had a different experience. I had a terrific education in Catholic school for 8 years. Most everyone else went to high school because it was expected of them. I went to college and I am NOT smart! I am totally average and in fact I have a problem understanding concepts. I need pictures or diagrams....... But my point is that my Catholic school education was superior to public education. Oh....maybe this is important. I'm talking about the 50's. ; }

    It sounds like Liberation Theology polluted your already small mind.

    Facism/Nazism, like Communism are based on Karl Marx's theories and that means they are Leftist.
    Marxism/Communism/Fascism/Nazism are all totalitarian in nature.

    As soon as you can tell me how much better it was to be arrested and tortured by the KGB than the Gestapo, I might think you know what your are talking about. As soon as you can tell me how much luckier the 15 million Ukrainians, killed by Stalin during the winter of 1932-1933 were than the 13 million killed in Hitler's camps, again, I might think that you know what you are talking about.

    There's nothing "liberal" about not teaching children to think for themselves or actively trying to prevent them from developing critical thinking skills. Well-funded schools with a challenging and engaging curriculum have always been a cornerstone of the ideal state that most Liberals would like us to move towards.

    As evidenced by the grammar, spelling, and English usage evidenced on this website, I don't think that education has gone liberal. It has gone inferior. Most genuine liberals that I know are very articulate and literate.

    I heard a lot of pretty good English spoken in both Spain and Morocco. On the airplane back, I sat next to an Algerian diplomat whose English was excellent.

    I was really amazed when I visited Barbados a few years ago. The poorest of the poor spoke better English than a lot of college graduates that I have known.

    In places where it failed to teach the science of evolution, it went conservative. More than half of adult Americans still don't accept this science. It really depends on where you check and even then on the topic referenced.

    They don't get paid much in Academia, so I think they've evolved an inflated sense of importance over the past few generations to compensate. Tragically, by expanding their mission into the inexplicably political, their core objectives (ie, the 'basics') have fallen by the wayside. They're telling 'em what to think, rather than teaching them how to find out for themselves.
