Why aren't bicycles designed so that the chain can't come off the gears?

It should be designed so that chains can be taken off or put on, but they shouldn't come off while the bike is being ridden, which is all too common.

Check before you ride and maintain the bike. I've never had a problem.

I think it does happen quite often to people. There are over 2 million matches for Bike Chain Came Off on Google. So is the gearing and chain set up as touchy as it is to indicate when something isn't aligned exact?

It seems like something as simple as larger round plates next to the highest and lowest gears could prevent the chain from jumping off the gear under almost any instance one could run into such as something not aligned exact, shifting to far, applying too much pressure to the pedal during shifting, hitting a bump, or accidentally hitting one's leg or foot against the chain.
