The video is obviously from a comedy show. Wedding cakes are expensive to make if they are traditional fruit cakes that are surounded in superstitions to protect the new couple through their marriage. The size and amount of cakes depend on the amount of guests invited and costs reflect that too. The detail in the decoration is labour intensive, can take weeks to complete and extras of flowers etc are often made because of damage when transporting or just moving them onto the cake. Decoration is hand made and includes waiting time and storage as well as skill and dilligence.

Because they are huge and beautiful. Mine was really good tasting, as well. However, instead of a bakery, I had a lady do mine for me, and it was much less expensive. She did wedding cakes all the time, but did not work for a bakery.
Not just the cake. Invitations, photographer, reception hall, you mention it's a wedding, you're bound to get screwed.
Luckily, I live in the country of beach weddings and barbecues. And I can make my own damn invitations.
Get a friend to take the photo's if they have a good camera, write up your own invitations, get a good cake recipe and and have it on the beach! Saves time and money! Love your way of thinking!
I have some ribbon in my craft room, which cost me $2 a metre. I can by a cheaper cake and wrap my own damn ribbon around it.... it would look just as pretty to me! :D
There is a lot of work to be put into a large cake. And, as can be seen on Ace of Cakes, the more detail work involved increases the price of the cake. Mine cost like $75 for the cutting cake and about $75 for the cake that fed 200.

I hate cake...so if I ever get married it's going to be a big wedding brownie...my friends and I will make and design it ourselves!

it is the same when you go to the hairdreser, they will take you much more money for the same service you did a mounth ago, but now it is for a wedding, so it will cost you more.
