Why are we on this rock spinning through space?

Why are we here?
I personally am one of those strange people that believe in both God and science. I don't believe we evolved from monkeys (as there is yet to be any proof). I do believe things evolve, its very evident all around us. Things change for the better over time to adapt to the situation. I know we are special and very much different from the monkeys, (although our DNA is very similar) in that I believe God placed us here. Why we are here, well that's what I am curious about. I look forward to the response from the SodaHead Community.

No, you do not. You could not "believe in science" when you say things like "I don't believe we evolved from monkeys". If you believed in science in any way, you would at least understand what evolution evidences. Humans are primates. Definitively. We merely share a distant, extinct, common ancestor with the other ape species that are still surviving today. Remember, 99.99% of all species that have ever lived on this planet are gone. Extinct. Never to be seen again. That is not creation (complete magical failure where most species die?), that is evolution. "although our DNA is very similar" also clearly evidences evolution.

    Why we are here?
Not sure. I only know I'm tickled that I am...

Based on what you've said, it would have been better to ask "how did we get here?" rather than asking for the purpose and meaning to life (the "why" question). I'll play along anyway.

I don't see why people think there needs to be an all encompassing reason for us to be here. People make their own purpose in life based on what they perceive needs to be accomplished. e.g. a kid is fascinated in the anatomy of the human body so thinks that his purpose is to become a doctor and help people.

As for how, the other comments here explain it pretty well. the relation to a common ancestor understood through transitional fossils which is supported by DNA and taxonomical analysis. it is interesting and i would suggest picking up a few books on it at least.

Wow, I was starting to worry as there was nobody voting for God. Thanks for being the first of hopefully many. Not to say that I don't respect the others view on evolution of people. Have a great night!

Evolution does not mean we evolved from monkeys. Monkeys are just another species of primate that evolved from a shared ancestor. It's not strange to believe in both evolution and God. I attended a Catholic school and we were taught both evolution and God as fact. They are not contradictory concepts.

I'm agnostic. I believe we evolved, likely by chance, and it doesn't matter why we are on this planet-- just that we are and we should make the best of it.

So your not curious at all to why we are here? I agree we are here and we need to make the best of it. Unfortunately many people that are in my life and that I communicate with on the net are with you on that. I say unfortunate because it feels weird being the minority in wanting to know why we are here, to me that seems like the mother of all questions and at least personally it matters a lot. Thanks for your response.

You're not alone in wanting to know why-- that's what created religion in the first place. The thing is, if there is no deity, there is no "why". Why would I search for an answer that I don't expect to even exist? If it's all chance, there's absolutely no
"why" to our existence unless someone gives it purpose. Give yourself purpose.

We didn't evolve from monkeys, we shared a common ancestor with them several hundred thousand years ago. Through natural selection we evolved separately into different organisms.

Thank you for taking the time to respond The last I heard was there is a missing link from the oldest known human fossil and the apes. As you probably know science is an ever changing field. One day science has a law a rule that is iron clad, then down the line they find out that rule isn't exactly right. Read about Newton and Einstein if you disagree. Have a great night.

I don't disagree. Macroevolution hasn't been proven completely, but it is accepted by almost every member of the scientific community. I wasn't saying evolution is a law, it isn't. I was simply informing (or reminding?) you that the theory isn't that we evolved from monkeys.

I hope you have a wonderful evening as well.

Actually yes I do believe in and love science but mostly quantum physics, biology never really was my cup of tea. That is partially why I wrote the question in the first place. I don't claim to understand biology on any level but I was stating science as a general term I didn't feel it was necessary to divulge the actual fields of science I enjoy most. The last I heard was there is a missing link from the oldest known human fossil and the apes. As you probably know science is an ever changing field. One day science has a law a rule that is iron clad, then down the line they find out that rule isn't exactly right. Read about Newton and Einstein if you disagree. Anyhow thanks for the comment I appreciate your time and opinion 8-)

You do realize evolution doesn't say we "evolved from monkeys" right? That's not what it says at all. We merely share the same ancestor far down the line. At one point our ancestors split off from our common ancestor and eventually over millennia we evolved into the current species. Honestly only idiots who haven't studied evolution and only follow what they've heard from others would ever beleive that's what the evolution claims. Ps there's plenty of fossil and geological evidence backing it up.

No one every said we evolved from monkeys. Well, no one educated on the matter has said such a thing. We evolved from a similar ancestor type being as the monkeys and apes. >.> As for why we're here, I don't know, nor do I spend any time trying to figure it out.
