I agree, all the modern telephones look alike however the old telephones were a thing of beauty. Here's a couple of mine: People buy common new stuff basically because they don't think out of the box, they're mindless sheeple
Keeping up with the Jonses mentality, although, some are cool and have more functions. That's like saying why do people want DVD or Blu-ray?
Just hang onto your VHS or Betamax, lol
Technology moves leaps and bounds every few years and people wanna keep up
Well maybe it's because I work in that industry but they are moving ahead in leaps and bounds...Right now having a 6 month newer cell phone is like moving from a 1970 Chevy to a 2012 BMW... That said I'm still 'driving' my 2 year old BB Torch and will suffer with it a while longer...
Phone calls? You use your phone to speak with people? Now a days that 'is' an app but web access, email, linked in, music and a dozen other things are more important...
I was not speaking about people who actually use their phone for work. You were mentioning music, linkedIn etc. Those things are not work related either.
I see teens and young adults who are attached at the ear with their cell phone and cannot make though a meal with out their phone.
Important calls are: Guess what, Jack just texted me what color lipstick should I wear tonight Mom would let me go out tonight as I have homework to do I am bored, do you want to do something What up
Banal conversations have always happened - that they now happen over sophisticated pieces of technology is not an indictment of the devices as much as an indictment of our communication skills...
I simply think that is is abused by many. I see no reason for anyone under the age of 16 to have a phone at all unless they are paying for it themselves.
There was a discussion on the radio this week about the exact same thing and it took a group of 9 teens to decide what color of shoes one girl should buy as they texted back and forth for over 40 minutes to make a decision. The girl could not decide for herself. That is very sad in my estimation that any person is that dependent on a group that they cannot have any independent thought of their own.

Everyone seem like there entire life depends on making calls that they cannot even put it down for even 5 minutes without having a major panic attack.

The list is nauseating
