Why are people obsessed with the private lives of Celebrities?

What is it about celebrities that make them so irresistible? Is it that
they lead such different lives? Is it that they have the ability to buy
whatever they want? Everyone has their own reason for wanting to take a look into the
life of their favorite A-List celebrity, and there is no stopping the
media machine. Look at all the polls about the Holmes/Cruise divorce. It isn't like famous couples don't divorce every day. While this story has the added intrigue of Scientology - it still seems to be an obsession.
Maybe the obsessed are living such dull lives - that they live vicariously through the lives of the celebs?

I remember when MTV played music...and mattered, when Kurt Loder broke in with News in Rock, to say that Brandy had a date to the prom. I still don't get why that was news. How does it affect anything in anyone's life who Brandy is going to prom with?
maybe there like the celebrities
maybe they like seeing them fail or hearing there gossip even if it's not true
maybe they want to be with the times
or maybe the lost the newspaper .....possibilities there isnt one reason
