The "conservatives" would probably win, just because it seems that its mainly "conservatives" who have a fetish for secession (not that there's anything wrong with that). So they would likely draw first blood and have stockpiled weapons, supplies, etc...

Ideally, if such a scenario was even remotely looming, we should go ahead and have each state elect its own president. The former U.S. president can have D.C. The intelligent (or just plain sensible) people will start making treaties with their neighbors.

Conservatives would win because they are more inclusive of different points of view and more tolerant so their side would attract more support. The marxist left would loose simply because many people instinctively reject totalitarianism and not all who think of themselves as liberals are marxists.

A civil war would cause more damage to this country than the policies of any government. If you really want change, I suggest you start by casting your ballots in 2010.
