Which One-of-a-Kind Gown Should Kate Middleton Wear to the Royal Wedding?
"We designed a 'blossoming' dress because we imagined her as a new Botticellian Venus." - Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli of Valentino
"I think that there will be so many comparisons to the late Princess Diana that her dress should almost be the opposite of what Diana's was - modern, simple and very elegant." - Tom Mora of J. Crew
Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel
"The Victorian wedding dress, with a twist -- high boots and open in the front." - Karl Lagerfeld
"I love the idea of mixing traditional opulence with a very clean aesthetic for this modern-day princess." - Jason Wu
"Something old: Victorian skirt. Something new: patchwork gown. Something borrowed: Queen Elizabeth's veil. Something red: Elizabethan top, as red was the wedding color until 1900!" - Christian Lacroix
"For [Kate], I had in mind clean lines, soft shapes and classic touches such as the boat neckline and distinctive train." - Frida Giannini, Gucci
"Light as a feather, layers of lace and organza dress fit for a princess." - Peter Copping of Nina Ricci
"Kate has a sophisticated yet playful and modern look, so for her wedding she'd be a vision in a mix of traditional, whimsy and classically beautiful." - Tommy Hilfiger
"It's a much more modern dress [than Princess Diana's], but romantic and out of the ordinary." - Elizabeth Emanuel
"The tradition of intricate hand-pieced lacework in the high-necked bodice with elbow-length sleeves, together with the voluminous skirt of a mixture of stiff and soft silk tulle, feels regal, yet poetic."
In anticipation of the pending nuptials, Women's Wear Daily asked some of the world's best designers to create a royal wedding dress fit for the occasion. Designs ranged from simple and modern to whimsical and baroque, and while some were winners, not all seemed fit for a (future) queen. Whether Middleton will actually consider the gowns is unclear, but with designs from big names like Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino and Vera Wang, it's likely she'll take note.
Among the designers who lent their vision was Elizabeth Emanuel, who famously designed the dress worn by Diana Spencer during her marriage to Prince Charles in 1983:
Emanuel's design passed muster in 1983, but will her aesthetic cut it for a modern princess? Take a look at the slideshow and let us know what you think. It all must be a little overwhelming for Kate, but somehow we don't think she'll mind this particular flurry of attention.
