Forget the prying eyes of the public -- this week it's the prying hands of the world's top designers that Kate Middleton must consider as she prepares for her marriage to Britain's Prince William.

In anticipation of the pending nuptials, Women's Wear Daily asked some of the world's best designers to create a royal wedding dress fit for the occasion. Designs ranged from simple and modern to whimsical and baroque, and while some were winners, not all seemed fit for a (future) queen. Whether Middleton will actually consider the gowns is unclear, but with designs from big names like Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino and Vera Wang, it's likely she'll take note.

Among the designers who lent their vision was Elizabeth Emanuel, who famously designed the dress worn by Diana Spencer during her marriage to Prince Charles in 1983:

emanuel famously designed dress diana spencer marriage prince charles 1983

Emanuel's design passed muster in 1983, but will her aesthetic cut it for a modern princess? Take a look at the slideshow and let us know what you think. It all must be a little overwhelming for Kate, but somehow we don't think she'll mind this particular flurry of attention.

I want Nina Ricci's for me! For a princess I would go w/Valentino's...but some of these designers created such hideous dresses (ahem Christian Lacroix) I wonder if they were serious..and J Crew? I guess they knew they had no chance of winning anyway...

Love the Valentino, but it needs to lose the ruffles that imitate Diana's dress.

Why would she want to imitate Diana?

She wouldn't, which is why I said the giant ruffles need to go. It's a very nice gown otherwise.

I fell in love with the gown Grace Kelly wore, when I saw a pic of it, especially the high collar and long sleeves. It spoke of a regal quality. The Gucci gown has some of that same flavor to it, but it needs to be flushed out a little more.

HOW THE COSTS WILL BE DIVIDED BETWEEN THE FAMILIES

The Queen, she's the matriarch, the grandmother, and the woman who is going to have to dig deepest into her pocket. The Queen will pay for much of the wedding. In return, she's been able to send out her invitations early, by fax, to other European royals — several of whom she is related to.

Her son, Prince Charles, is paying for the dinner and dance in the evening. He may be controlling the purse strings, but he will have little say over the music on offer. Prince William's favorites — such as Linkin Park and Kanye West — are unlikely to be on his 62-year-old father's iPod. Not that he's likely to possess one.

And Kate Middleton's parents, Carole and Mike, will make a contribution. One suggestion is that they will buy the dress. Their mail-order firm, which sells toys and party goods, has made them millionaires.

Plain wouldn't really work for her, and I don't fancy the whole traditional thing they seem to want.
This is perfect. I would be jealous.

Really, I think we need to look at what is befitting a royal, which is what she IS going to be. My second choice would be the Valentino, but that ghastly, garrish haberdashery mismatched Nightmare with the red in it just needs to Go, and she certainly should Not wear anything with too much skin showing (no excess cleavage, no bare back, and no short sleeves, bustier, or sleeveless), but rather, something elegant and extraordinary. Besides, she should wear something CLASSY rather than trashy, and leave more to the imagination.

I think people are forgetting she has not only the distinct priveledge but also the distinct Responsibility of marrying a probable future king And being the probable Mother of a future king - tackiness, even "trendy" tackiness, is unbecoming what is expected of her.

Don't anyone jump on me over so-called women's lib things, either. Everyone is already sick of "rock-star" royals and their behavior.

Or do people forget Fergie (and even Diana) acting out? Yes, I realize they were pretty stressed for reasons, but how is it possible to blame others for our own actions? Tearful temper tantrums, childish antics for attention, and partying in Monte Carlo with a minor league rugby player or chauffer, and getting caught toe-sucking outside of wedlock, are something I would expect these people, who are so highly regarded, to rise above...even if it sucks to be them. Class is something you carry with you, not something you throw on with a tramp-style dress.
  • Ericka Ericka 2010/12/17 07:35:18

Although I did have to give Diana credit for finally growing up, stop acting out and crying, and becoming a grown woman in her own right. She didn't start off that way, the poor thing. Fergie, on the other hand...still weighing that one.

And just how does that compare to Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan and all the rest of the Hollywood crowns. I guess if you are American you are exempt from all that.
  • Ericka Muskoka 2011/04/26 08:18:20

Um, no actually - they TOTALLY sicken me with their antics. American or no, I wouldn't like them at all. Get to know me a bit before you judge me, okay?
