The Greek language is the richest in the world with 5 million words and 70 million word types, according to the 1990 Guinness Book of Records, while the English language has only 490.000 words.

Arabic language is the mother of languages and before the Greece as a nation exist. The Aramic Language (prophet Ibraham language) and the kanaan languages are rooted out of Arabic language. Hebrew language is the daughter of Aramic language. look at the roots of the following words in latin, the root is pure Arabic: Nobil, sherif, Tall, Just, earth, mirror,......

greek is the most magic language in the world. English language use so many greek words and so many greek word types. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... .In addition English language has a lot of latin words but the truth is that the latin language is also influenced by the Greek language.

If you look at total number of words it would have to be English, but if you look at uniqueness there are many candidates. Chinese with its characters. Esperanto is pretty unique as well not only with its structure and creation but the international culture that has grown up around it. Many languages have great world literatures (French, Spanish, Italian, Russian...) Some languages have multiple alphabets (Mongolian, Azeri, Tajik, etc.) and some languages use more than one alphabetic systems at the same time (Korean with two and Japanese with three). Then there is Mayan who was an ancient hieroglyphic language that in modern usage has given this writing system up. Or Coptic which is arguably dead and arguably revived. How can one answer the question either right or wrong?

Just because you have more words does not indicate a corresponding complexity. English is complex due to the lack of words. Most English is implied that way you do not need so many words to describe or create richness.

Actually only about 15% of the words used in English are of Greek origin. Most of English is from French and Latin bases.

It is not the words itself but the way the words can be combined to convey new ideas! English has only 540,000 words but can convey vast about of knowledge. English is the Number 1 spoken and written language in the world. There are more new english speakers each day from China and India than the number of Arabic speakers.

You have to understand that the richness of a language has to do with the maximum capasity you can speak for a certain object or word . And when you can discribe something with so much more vocabulary( thats the greek) you sure can convey more ideas by far. The reason tha english is the 1 language spoken in the word has to do with enything else but richness color or meaning and vocabulary. If you take out the geeek words from english you have no language. You have no medicine you have no fysics you have no biology even poetry.
  • Theresa john mak 2012/12/03 13:08:56
    Theresa
Actually there is very little Greek besides Medicine and Scientific endeavors in English. The bulk of English is both Regular Anglo Saxon words and Latin. The next language which affects English is French. Followed by German.
