Not everyone is going to be a Math Teacher when they grow up, it's very important to be able to read, you have to be able to read signs like A stop sign for example, you have to know how to read stop so that you can be safe, and lets say theres a bottle in front of you, math wont help you figure out if its poison or not, if you read the lable, it might say if its poison, or if your eating a type of food, you might want to read the ingredients to make sure nothing your allergic to is in their, reading is very helpful, it allows you to read the exit signs, know whether or not something is poisoned, or if something is medicine, and it allows you to read whether something is out dated or not, reading helps us with every day things, there are more ways reading can help you than I listed, but I think its much more important to read than to do math

While it really isn't a case of 'which is more important', I would rather be able to read. However, long before reading was common, things were passed on orally, and it was a full profession to tell stories, and that worked pretty well for people... It'd save trees and it'd be great and all, but I still love reading. What I'm trying to say is that, although we could manage without reading while we probably couldn't do without maths, personally, reading is the one for me.

By far. The only math the average person will need in their daily lives is the core basics anyway. Compare it to reading; you'd need a lot more than just knowing the alphabet to get by in our society.
