Which film do you think represents war the best and why?

I propose The Deer Hunter because it focuses on peoples lives before they go to war, while they are at war and after they get back.

Before war they are elated and proud of the prospect.
There is only a little bit focused on actual fighting, as is true in wars. And it is very bloody and unglamorous. And it also shows the horror of capture.
Then it goes into the personal consequences of experiencing the horror of war, after they get back and try to deal with ordinary life.

What say you?

I've never seen deerhunter but I'd say Full Metal Jacket, because it looks all fun and games, then is terrible and awful, and leaves you with a strange feeling throughout the film and after. I'll keep an eye out for the other one though.

Yeah, you're right about Full Metal Jacket. It does have that element.

The Deer Hunter is a super film. It stars Robert DeNero, is 3 hours long and only to be watched if you want to be "moved". Oh, and it's a Vietnam war film.

Slaughter-House Five is the one that comes to mind. The book (Vonnegut) is a brilliant castigation of war, and the movie (1972) was true to the book.

mind book vonnegut brilliant castigation war movie 1972 true book

even though its not one of my preferred war films, i agree with your comments about the deer hunter. before i read it the first film that came to my mind was the good, the bad and the ugly and how insignificant the american civil war seems to the goals of the 3 main characters. particularly the battle scenes around the wooden bridge that they need to cross.

    That is a good film.

It does highlight another aspect of war. There are always people like that around in all wars from what I've read.

Well, the comraderie of some of the characters is fairly authentic to real life, I guess.

    Erm...Hari ini sangat sepoy sepoy?
I think that I've reached the limit of my Malay.

I'm not overly keen on the Lords of the rings films. I read the books and feel that the makers of the film did a poor job. But they could have done worse. I still can't understand why they didn't add in Sarumans takeover of the Shire, which happens at the end of the book. There's a reference to it in the film when they look into Galadriels mirror of the future.

I like alot of films. The God father trilogy are quite cool. Dune is very good. I'm watching a Star Trek film that I've not yet seen tonight.

Oh, have you seen Shaun of the dead?
