Where, when and who did the Ten Commandments originate from?

bob 2012/08/07 18:21:10
The Ten Commandments were written and/or dictated by God at Mount Sinai, circa 1450 BCE.
The Ten Commandments were written by groups of Hebrew authors between 922 and 622 BCE based upon ancient Hebrew myths and legends.
Ten Commandments originate from the Hittites. The original texts appear to be similar to treaties imposed by Hittite kings on their vassals in the 14th-13th centuries BCE
Ten Commandments originate from the Egyptians as part of the book of the Dead a.k.a. the Papyrus of Ani
The eternally wandering sheep herders known as Hebrews have been stealing ideas since they first crawled out from their desert wastelands.

I'd like to help people put these things in perspective:

1-4: god is self conscious about its looks or something and has to feel fabulous <3. the first four are just saying "i am insecure, please love me".
    5: contradicts Matthew 10: 35-36
6: pretty bloody obvious, if someone needs to be told this then something is wrong.
    7: i explained in 10
8-9: we can be useful and put these two together. stealing can be considered bearing false witness as the person stealing is being deceitful.
10: two things i would point out. the first is that this is thought crime and heinous to even think someone would demand this. second is that i doubt anyone who didn't covet wouldn't have committed adulterous actions so we can throw away 7.

now watch as every christian flames me.

If you look closely you will discover that most of the Leviticus laws come from a period of around 1750BCE. They came for the most part from the Law Code of Hammurabi. The actual 10 Commandments are not that unique either since they were actually part of monotheistic beliefs of many different religions long before the ancient Hebrews wrote theirs.

Actually, though we have no artifacts to prove it, the Ten Commandments and other laws of God were known to Adam and his progeny.

Well, Adam, by definition is the first man and would logically have been before the Egyptians.

It was fashionable at the time to have codes of laws. Groups who had these considered themselves civilized and it was a point of pride for them. Of course each group adapted and modified the codes from other groups. This is not stealing, no more than American forefathers stole the ideas for our codes.

So how can he legitimately say Jew as part of the translation? If he really understood it, and there is no intimation of nationality in the original language, he could not say it said that.

He can't, its incorrect. And these can't even be called a nation at this time. A clan, a people, a cultural group perhaps. Moses was trying to unite them, to solidify and codify this culture, and I think these laws were part of this effort.

They were made up by some guys who decided to sit down one day and write a nice piece of fantasy fiction, which ended being a best seller.

A few thousand years later, another man did the same thing, and called his the Laws of Robotics, and there were only 3 of them.

Like almost all the content in the bible, they originate from previous religions that were overcome by Christianity. What better way to assimilate new people who previously believed in other faiths into your own my making rites, rules, and rituals that are the same as the ones the used to have?
