I chose vegetables because I think it is stupid that Yogurt is the only dairy option. Because of this I will be less likely to buy Yoplait Yogurt again - there are plenty of other brands out there if I decide I want yogurt.

I drink one or two glasses of Skim Milk per day as almost everyone in my family has for at least a hundred years. I also like string cheese as a snack from time to time. I make smoothies out of frozen berries, orange juice and one cup of low fat yogurt (NOT YOPLAIT) - best smoothie you will every have! I also love to cook with Spinach (good source of calcium) and we find many ways to work it into our foods. One of my favorite recipes calls for a box of corn bread mix, cottage cheese and a box of frozen spinach (thawed). You make it like corn bread - it's delicious! Of course I like a little ice cream from time to time but that's way to high in sugar to eat often.

Did you know that a glass of skim milk has 12 gram of sugar? I'm a diabetic and it seem that since I read the labels - everything has way too much sugar. Why can't the food consortium make things with Splenda or Stiva (not aspartame which may be a cause for cancer) Seems like if they really want to sell nutritious food they could eliminate most sugars. I think that most of the food manufactures see only the bottom line and to hell with real nutrition.

Yes I did know that. And as part of a "balanced" diet sugar is included in that mix - normal intake is about 100g per day (not naturally occurring in foods). So two glasses of skim milk give me mos of the calcium I need and about 25% of my "extra" sugar intake.

You're right, nutrition is always what corporations are looking at...actually hardly ever. Since sugar is naturally occurring in dairy products it's tough to do anything about it BUT you can find yogurts that are made with splenda instead of added sugars (most use aspartame, you are correct).

Unsweetened Soy MIlk has only about 1g of sugars vs Skim MIlk, a much better option if you can handle soy milk ( I don't like the taste). But Soy milk has about 75% less calcium in it than milk so it doesn't help in that regard.

Diabetes is certainly a concern and sometimes an obstacle when trying to work out your nutritional intake. The more sugars / calories you take in the more Insulin you have to take in to counter the effect. Fortunately I haven't had to deal with that too much but my glucose levels were at 100 last physical so it's always in the back of my mind when I eat something!

The ONLY truly SAFE place to get the "safe calcium" for your diet, is through food, produced on balanced living organic type soils. Soils not poisoned by antibiotics in manure, soils not killed by "cides".
Then too, Phosphoric acid depleats calcium from your body. You would never guess where Phosphoric acid is found, that so so many consume like water? YUP! Most soda contains enough phosphoric acid that if a person drinks it one or more times a day, They are bringing on that ugly "O" disease; that you may now simply buy a dangerous pill to correct. Wonder why the Pharmaceutical companies do not tell us about the soda and other processed food connections to the phosphoric acid problems. Do you suppose a multi million dollar business would taint their integrity? What integrity?
  • Ron The Bee... 2010/12/23 22:00:16

Many farms are being over farmed and the soils are being depleted of most minerals. Most farms need a period of rest and have different crops grown and then just plowed under to help rejuvenate the soil. Maybe a organic manure might help also, but in the meantime there is no minerals being provided by the soil in which your vegetables are grown.

That is why we have (and are) remineralized our fields using some very complete soils tests, then using organic type procedures. It is also very important to balance the ratios of the major nutrients, NPK and Calcium for a starter, also to keep the Mg. low to avoid weeds, and keep the sulfer in proper levels. Yes we also feed our animals kelp, and we use very very little antibiotic, which destroys essential soil microbes as well as bad bugs. All this to say it is possible to eat healthy, but you have to educate yourself about what that takes. See Lancaster Agriccultural Products for a bit more education also westonaprice.org. Have a great new year eating healthy. PS almost all soils used to produce feedlot animals for the USA are dead, from the overuse of antibiotics. One of the most dangerous things we do.

I like broccoli too but to get the same amount of calcium as two glasses of Skim Milk you need to eat 10 cups of broccoli. That's a lot of broccoli (and a lot of gas!!).

If you want it from Vegetables try Spinach - it has 2.5 times more calcium than broccoli and gives you less gas!! Turnip Greens have about 9 times more calcium but aren't as tasty as either broccoli or spinach.

Another one that I have is a glass of calcium fortified orange juice...lots of calcium (about 1/3 of what you need daily) + a whole lot of potassium.

"Obviously neither kids nor their parents are learning about how
milk has been linked to Type 1 diabetes, prostate cancer, osteoporosis,

Keep drinking the vegetarian kool-aide. Those so called links you speak of are all links paid for by the PETA lead vegetarian coalition. For every "link" you point to I will show you 20 more that tell a totally different story.

You're right, this question is totally bogus because it is sponsored by a yogurt maker. Regardless, I can point you to dozens of studies done by UNIVERSITY scientists that paint a much different picture than the one you portray. T. Colin Campbell is the widely known author of "The China Diet" and a very outspoken advocate of the vegan lifestyle. Quoting him on the subject is no better than Yoplait posting this question. Both are very biased opinions.

And to say Yoplait Yogurts (or yogurt in general) isn't good for you is a pretty poor statement. Are there better foods, yes some. Are there Worse foods for you to ingest...definitely! Let's play a game. Your child has two choices for lunch - McDonald's Cheeseburger & Fries or a Turkey Sandwich & Yoplait Yogurt - which are you choosing. OK, that's too easy. Now how about this. McDonalds Cheesburger & Fries OR McDonalds Hamburger & Yoplait Yogurt? Yoplait is by far a better choice than almost EVERY fast food side dish. Lower calorie, good source of protein, high potassium - not a bad choice for a side dish.

    I just...

I just looked it up, here's the nutritional info for a regular strawberry Yoplait yogurt (6oz / 170grams):

    Calories: 170
    Fat (grams): 1.5
    Potassium: 230mg
    Total Carbs: 33g
    Sugars: 26g
50% of Calcium (Recommended Daily Allowance)
    50% of Vitamin D
    15% of Vitamin A
    10% of Protein

I don't buy Yoplait yogurt, too expensive for what you get but I do eat Dairy Products. My parents eat dairy products and my grandparents ate dairy products and so on. Sorry, they lived well into their upper 80's and 90's. These days it seems everything causes cancer and everyone is trying to scare you with that. Let me put this out there...unless you grow your own food AND protect it from contamination from outside sources, your vegetables are just as bad for you as you think dairy products are. Pesticides are widely used in the commercial food supply and it definitely gets into your food.

You seem like a pretty young kid who has found something they want to champion. Great! But really you should be a little more informed before you start quoting every scientist who supports your view - it's a big bad world out there and people have been getting nutrition from dairy for thousands of years. Overeating is a much bigger concern and I will guaranty you that all the numbers are skewed not because people eat dairy, or meat, or whatever but that they eat too much of it. There's little argument over that.

Yes, I eat home-grown fruits and vegetables, as you suspect. I agree that a lot of produce isn't safe, but most of it is still safer than animal products. I'm 32, and I've been a vegetarian for over a decade. I would be a vegan, for ethical reasons, if I lived by myself and could do so without being difficult. For now, I just get as close to veganism as I can without being an inconvenience to those who try to do nice things for me. For instance, if everyone is having pizza, and they have been thoughtful enough to order it without meat as a way of including me, I'm not going to complain about the cheese. I just avoid buying eggs and dairy products when I do the shopping.

I mention the health risks here, but really the health-related issues are secondary. I mostly care about not contributing to the suffering of animals. You can eat whatever you want, and you are free to be just as suspicious of "The China Study" as I am of the research funded by the dairy industry. We all decide what we believe, and we live accordingly. I was just pointing out that this question was clearly here for advertising purposes, in case people were taking it too seriously. I think we can agree about that.
