When your parents were telling you to clean your plate, which part of the world did they say "people in" are starving or would love to have that food?

I think each generation had a different area of the world that they would reference.

It was kind of a mixed phrase in my family's house. It was whatever one was on the tip of the tounge.

I guess I could say All of the Above,
my family told me that there were starving children all over the world.
And then I thought that me eating the food was not going to help them.

In my mom's generation, it was "China." I never used the phrase with my daughter, but she heard about it elsewhere. One day when she was little, teasing me because I hadn't finished my dinner, she said, "Mom, eat all your dinner. Just think of all of the starving children in Niagara." LOL.

And my father claimed that's what his grandmother would tell him at the dinner table. It beats me how cleaning my plate would help feed the starving Chinese.

I think she might have used Africa once or twice. Even thought there were kids starving in Bangladesh and other places at the time. Personally it didn't work and she had to try other tactics.

We were starving and loved to have food. Plates didn't go uncleaned in my house when I was a kid.

Africa! Why does it always have to be Africa? There are other countries that have people who are just as starving..

My parents never used that one.It was eat what is put in front of you or go hungry period.I once had a burger that was kept in the fridge for about 2 or three days. They realized that I would rather starve than eat that damn burger.Of course they didn't want me to starve so that was the end of that from that point forward.

The nuns in my grade school would say the kids in Biafra which hasn't been a country for decades now; but in real life at home, if I didn't finish my dinner I was not allowed to leave the table until I did. I missed more hours of TV & more evenings running around outside than I care to remember. It was a fierce battle of wills between my dad & I, but I usually won because it became my bedtime or my always sympathetic mom would come to my rescue and get my dad to let me off the hook. Good times.

That was back in the fifties and they said the plate would sit there until I finished it or be there for breakfast. The thought of it being around for breakfast was terrible so I finished it, but as a adult I don't eat the things they forced me to eat.

Everywhere. They said "poor people in the world" but not necessarily name where.
