When you see a sign that says "No Soliciting Allowed", was there a certain group of people that inspired the sign originally?

Jesus had a fit inside of a temple when he saw all the money changers soliciting and loitering on the outside of it. I doubt that's the reason why, but it's the oldest example of the No Soliciting mentality I can think of .

To me it applies to all solicitors, not just religious people.

The "No soliciting" sign came with the house, when I got it. Seemed like a good idea to keep it.

I would tend to agree with you it would have to have been for a reason of some kind. Or maybe the business doesnt want to be associated with whom ever is selling what ever product? Or being interrupted from a potential sale in their own business?

Most religious groups, like jehovah's witness, have fought and won in court their right to go door to door or profess their faith in a public setting. If memory serves me correctly, it was the Krishna group (my spelling is probably wrong) that was the first to challenge the state on this, citing first amendment protections.

The group were those freaky monk looking types that hung out at airports and bus stations. Long story short, they sued and were successful. The case made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and is considered a landmark freedom of speech case.

Solicitors that are selling merchandise, on the other hand, must get a permit in certain jurisdictions.
