I prefer to get it over with so I can have the night to myself. I haven't worked a graveyard shift before but that would be interesting. I work both day and night shifts though. There's nothing worst than closing one night than opening the next morning though.

Day is OK as long as it does not start before 7AM. Getting up and leaving the house while it is still dark out does not appeal to me.

Night is OK if it is like 4PM to Midnight. so I can sleep semi-normal hours and have days free to conduct personal business. But graveyard, like 11-7AM is for Younger people or Single people my age (54) It would only be OK if my wife also worked that shift.

actually 3-11pm, I loved, but when I started my family, aside from being home from school, there was baseball,basketball,soccer,sc... bottom line had to go to first.

Definitely day shift, the routine, 9 to 5 idea. The reason I like my evenings and weekends, and I am now looking for a job, with this type of hours. My hubby works 4 - 10 hour days and off for 3 days. So it's easy on me, to be able to cook and clean, especially when he is not home. Then sometimes I can catch things up and not have to wait for Sunday. Which actually is a day I like to sleep in and relax the entire day if I wish to.

because when you get off in the day you have time to rest and still have time to do other things.

Because it allows you to see your family and friends pretty regularly for the most part.

I once took a third shift job thinking I'd still be able to maintain a normal relationship with them only to find out I'd come home all wired up unable sleep for at least a few hours. It was one of those things that sounded good in theory but didn't work out....well for me anyway.

A typical day at the office:

I would like to come in at 9AM at which time I would eat my breakfast til 10AM, at which time I would have a coffee break til 10:30 AM.

Then from 10:30 to 11 AM, I would catch up with the office gossip around the water cooler till 12.

At 12, I would have lunch til 1PM then I would check my personal email and annoy bloggers on SH til 2PM at which time, I would have a coffee break til 2:30 PM.

At 2:30 PM, I would be so tired from all this work, I would sneak off to the rest room and catch a few winks til 3 PM.

At 3PM, I would answer my voice mail til 3:30 PM. Sheesh, that is tiring!

Now I have to decide where to make reservations for dinner so I surf the internet til 4PM and find a great spot for predinner cocktails and dinner.

At this point, I have this tremendous headache so I go to the infirmary for some aspirin and the nurse says I am overworked and tells me to lie down for an hour.

It is now 5PM and now I have to refresh my make up and gather my belongings and head for cocktails and dinner that I so richly deserve after this grueling tedious workday.

Third shift actually... from midnight to the morning. Because then I don't have to see the head workers and I can sleep all day. And not worry about the day

Day shift, for sure. I worked swing shift for over five years, and unless I received
differential pay along with my regular and overtime pay and benefits, then I would
think twice before doing that again. I barely had any semblance of a life when I
worked the swing shift. While graveyard shift still ain't quite as desirable as the
day shift, I'll take that over swing shift, especially with the aforementioned extra
differential pay. One thing that I will never go for, is rotating shifts. Those are
way too difficult to cope with, physically, mentally, and socially. Rotating shifts
are way too taxing on workers.

    Graveyard or 3rd shift.
I got paid for 8 hours but only had to be ther for 7.5.
Also got my 30 min lunch and 2 15 min breaks.
So I only had to work 6.5 hours.

I have worked grave yard for the last 2 years and it really messes you up. It is hard to sleep durring the day. Most of your friends call when you are sleeping. You never get enough rest. You are tiered all the time and spacey. I hope to get a day shift again.

I remember one of the best features of working the on-call shift in an elective in Anesthesiology was getting to hang out with the OR nurses, while we watched a late movie playing in the lounge.

It was "Fail Safe," with Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau, etc.
