When it comes to politics do you take a more liberal standpoint or conservative? (Please read what I have to say before you answer)

Morgan 2012/04/22 16:58:40
You!

Also, do you really know whats what?

I didn't completely. I stayed away from politics because there's always senseless fighting. But today I decided to look at both of their beliefs on an unbiased site. I found that on some issues I take a more liberal standpoint and some I take a more conservative standpoint. On the rest, I agree with both sides so... I don't totally know where I stand right now.
But check these out and see where you stand. And please read all of these and don't just say what you immediately think. It may change.

Evolution

Conservative vs. Liberal Beliefs

CONSERVATIVES - Believe in personal
responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty,
traditional American values and a strong national defense. Believe the role of
government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own
goals. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual
to solve problems.

LIBERALS - Believe in governmental control to achieve equal opportunity and
equality for all, and that it is the duty of the State to alleviate social ills
and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role
of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Liberal
policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve people's
problems.

THE ISSUES: CONSERVATIVE vs LIBERAL

ABORTION
Conservatives: Human life begins at conception. Abortion is the
murder of a human being. Nobody has the right to murder a human being. Support
legislation to prohibit partial birth abortions, called the "Partial Birth
Abortion Ban" (partial birth abortion - the killing of an unborn baby of at
least 20 weeks by pulling it out of the birth canal with forceps, but leaving
the head inside. An incision is made in the back of the baby's neck and the
brain tissue is suctioned out. The head is then removed from the
uterus.)
Liberals: A fetus is not a human life. The decision to have an
abortion is a personal choice of a woman regarding her own body and the
government should stay out of it, except to pay for it. Women should be
guaranteed the right to a safe and legal abortion, including partial birth
abortion.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
Conservatives: People should be admitted to schools
and hired for jobs based on their ability. It is unfair to use race as a factor
in the selection process. Reverse-discrimination is not a solution for
racism.
Liberals: Due to prevalent racism in the past, minorities were
deprived of the same education and employment opportunities as whites. We need
to make up for that. Support affirmative action based on the belief that America
is still a racist society. Minorities still lag behind whites in all statistical
measurements of success. Also, the presence of minorities creates
diversity.

DEATH PENALTY
Conservatives: The death penalty is a punishment that fits
the crime; it is neither ‘cruel' nor ‘unusual'. Executing a murderer is the
appropriate punishment for taking an innocent life.
Liberals: We should
abolish the death penalty. The death penalty is inhumane and is ‘cruel and
unusual' punishment. It does not deter crime. Imprisonment is the appropriate
punishment. Every execution risks killing an innocent person.

ECONOMY
Conservatives: The free market system, competitive capitalism,
and private enterprise afford the widest opportunity and the highest standard of
living for all. Free markets produce more economic growth, more jobs and higher
standards of living than those systems burdened by excessive government
regulation.
Liberals: Favor a Government operated (Socialism) system in which
government regulates the economy. We need government to protect us against big
businesses. We need government regulation to level the playing field.

THE
ENVIRONMENT
Conservatives: Desire clean water, clean air and a clean planet,
just like everyone else. However, extreme environmental policies destroy jobs
and damage the economy. Changes in global temperatures are natural over long
periods of time. So far, science has not shown that humans can affect permanent
change to the earth's temperature.
Liberals: Conservatives don't care about
protecting the environment. Industrial growth harms the environment. Global
warming is caused by an increased production of carbon dioxide. The U.S. is a
major contributor to global warming because it produces 25% of the world's
carbon dioxide. The U.S. should enact laws to significantly reduce that
amount.

GUN CONTROL AND THE ACLU
Conservatives: The Second Amendment gives the
individual the right to keep and bear arms. Gun control laws do not thwart
criminals. You have a right to defend yourself against criminals. More guns mean
less crime. Thinks the ACLU is a anti-American anti-God
organization.
Liberals: The Second Amendment gives no individual the right to
own a gun, but allows the state to keep a militia (National Guard). Guns kill
people. Guns kill children. Prefers socialist policies and organizations like
the ACLU.

HEALTH CARE
Conservatives: Free health care provided by the government
(socialized medicine) means that everyone will get the same poor-quality health
care. The rich will continue to pay for superior health care, while all others
will receive poor-quality free health care from the government. Health care
should remain privatized. Support Health care Spending Accounts.
Liberals:
Support universal government-controlled health care. There are millions of
Americans who can't afford health insurance. They are being deprived of a basic
right to health care.

IMMIGRATION
Conservatives: Support legal
immigration at current numbers, but do not support illegal immigration.
Government should enforce immigration laws. Oppose President Bush's amnesty plan
for illegal immigrants. Those who break the law by entering the U.S. illegally
should not have the same rights as those who obey the law by entering
legally.
Liberals: Support legal immigration and increasing the number of
legal immigrants permitted to enter the U.S. each year. Support blanket amnesty
for current illegal immigrants. Believe that regardless of how they came to the
U.S., illegal immigrants deserve the same rights as American citizens. Illegal
immigrants do the jobs that Americans do not want to do.

RELIGION
Conservatives: The phrase "separation of church and state" is
not in the Constitution. The First Amendment to the Constitution states
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." This prevents the government from
establishing a national church. However, it does not prevent God from being
acknowledged in schools and government buildings. Oppose the removal of symbols
of Christian heritage from public and government spaces. Believe that this
country was founded on the Judea-Christian Faith. Government should not
interfere with any religion and religious freedom.
Liberals: Support the
separation of church and state. Religious expression has no place in government.
Support the removal of all references to Christianity in public and government
spaces. Religion should not interfere with government. Believes all World
Religions are the same.
EVOLUTION OF MAN

Conservatives: Being a conservative means for most that they believe in the
Biblical account of Creation with it's moral guidelines for living. Our way of
life in America will only work in a moral society.

Liberals: It's usually a liberal who believes in Evolution and all it
ramifications such as no moral code, anything goes; besides you're only an
animal. Their guide to life leans closely to paganism, as you see today in their
refusal to punish child molesters. Nothing is bad if there is no law against
it.

SAME SEX MARRIAGE
Conservatives: Marriage is between one man and one
woman. Opinions differ on support for the creation of a constitutional amendment
establishing marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Believe that
requiring citizens to sanction same-sex relationships violates moral and
religious beliefs of millions of Christians, Jews, Muslims and others who
believe marriage is the union of a man and a woman.
Liberals: Marriage should
be legal for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender couples to ensure equal
rights for all. All individuals, regardless of their sex, have the right to
marry. Believe that prohibiting same-sex citizens from marrying denies them of
their civil rights.

TAXES
Conservatives: Support lower taxes and a smaller government. Lower
taxes create more incentive for people to work, save, invest, and engage in
entrepreneurial endeavors. Money is best spent by those who earn
it.
Liberals: Support higher taxes and a larger government. High taxes enable
the government to do good and create jobs. We need high taxes for social welfare
programs, to provide for the poor. We can't afford to cut taxes.

UNITED NATIONS (UN)
Conservatives: The UN has repeatedly failed in its
essential mission: to preserve world peace. The wars, genocide and human rights
abuses of the majority of its member states (and the UN's failure to stop them)
prove this point. History shows that the United States, not the UN, is the
global force for spreading freedom, prosperity, tolerance and peace. The U.S.
should never subvert its national interests to those of the UN.
Liberals: The
United States has a moral and a legal obligation to support the United Nations
(UN). The UN can be effective in promoting peace and human rights. The U.S.
should not have acted in Iraq without UN approval. The U.S. should submit its
national interests to the greater good (as defined by the
UN).

WELFARE
Conservatives: Oppose long-term welfare. We need to
provide opportunities to make it possible for poor and low-income workers to
become self-reliant. It is far more compassionate and effective to encourage a
person to become self-reliant, rather than keeping them dependent on the
government for money.
Liberals: Support welfare. We need welfare to provide
for the poor. Conservatives oppose welfare because they are not compassionate
toward the poor. We have welfare to bring fairness to American economic life.
Without welfare, life below the poverty line would be intolerable. Support
taking more from the rich and giving it to the poor (income redistribution).
Goal is to equalize. One class of people, no have and have nots.

What I believe personally is not necessarily what I believe politically. Politically I am fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Personally I am more conservative in my values, but I don't believe in trying to legislate morality. I believe in a very limited government and personal freedom limited only when it infringes upon that of another.

Why did you ask that question. You have already made up your mind about what is what and will not hear any logical argument to the contrary.

Many on Sodahead call me a liberal. Yet I am staunchly pro-life, anti illegal immigration, I don't believe in hate crimes, I don't believe in the occupy movement, yet I do believe in universal health care in some form, I do believe in clean air and water and believe we should do whatever we can to preserve our earth, I beieve in massive welfare reform and I pay taxes and don't sit on my ass and bitch about it.

I decide what I think on a 'case by case' basis.

You pretend to be objective but some of these (not all) are right-wing-biased. Left wing =/= socialist, just as right wing =/= fascist.

People who believe in evolution do not believe that humans have no moral code. They believe our moral code is derived from our surroundings, an innate sense, etc. It does not come from God. Study morality sometime >.>

I always vote GOP because I believe we need a MUCH smaller, cheaper, less intrusive government, and we can't afford to pour barrels of money into countries who dont' even like us in the first place. We have problems to address here at home, first.

However, I'm in favor of abortion and gay marriage and I oppose the death penalty and religion in the classroom. On just about everything else, I toe the Conservative line.

I actually would lean more conservative if the game wasn't rigged against the individual. Corporations have too much control in our politics. Greed has become excessive. The individual's power has been usurped by the power and money of corporate excesses. Government is the arbitrator for the many vs the few, or should be.

Morally speaking I'm a conservative. But I seperate my personal moral convictions from my politics. I'm actually a libertarian when it comes to politics. Libertarians are usually very concerned with the size and practices of the federal government and make it a point to point out constitutional and unconstitutional practices. They favor a smaller less involved federal government, overall believing that a less involved government maximizes personal liberty.

I don't things are as black and white as that and I do believe that there is a role for government and a role for the individual. In most cases, the government should not be involved the the things that individuals are responsible for. That is where the rubber meets the road and where many conservatives and liberals fall off the tracks. They want government to do the things they want done, but not the things they want to do themselves. So perhaps a better political scale is one that looks at authoritarianism vs totalitarianism. There is an interesting way of looking at this which was developed by Nolan, a libertarian and promoted by various libertarian groups. My favorite, if it is still out there is the World's Smallest Political Quiz that looks at a number of important social and economic issues and creates a scale for left, right, authoritarian, and libertarian.

My views could probably best be described as socially liberal (with the exception of strict gun regulations), fiscally conservative, and non-interventionist.

I'm liberal in that I believe in equal human rights for everyone, I'm pro-choice, I support the legalization of marijuana, and I'm a secularist and environmentalist.
I'm conservative in that I'm against excessive government spending, I'm against most government regulations, I believe in minimum taxation, and I support free trade.
And by "non-interventionist" I mean that I'm against the U.S. meddling in foreign affairs. I'm also anti-war unless it relates to direct self-defense, which means no preemptive wars or humanitarian wars.
(Though these are just the basics)

    All-in-all I guess you could say that I'm a left-leaning libertarian.
    -----------------------------

EDIT: My only problem with the description in the post is the assertion that liberals believe in government control. The belief that government should take an active role in solving society's problems is more of a progressive belief than a liberal one. Liberal and progressive aren't exactly the same thing.

I love what you said "what I believe personally is not neccessarily what I believe politically." Very well said. Morally speaking I'm a conservative, but politically speaking I'm a libertarian. I've heard both liberal and conservative arguments and neither really made sense to me until I discovered libertarianism. Overall I'd say I want the federal government to decrease in size and get back to a more constitutional America.
