IF you are drinking to cool off.
However, if you are drinking to hydrate yourself, COOL, not cold water is best as your body will metabolize it faster and more efficiently.

Also do NOT use "sports drinks" to hydrate. Use them for electrolyte replacement, and that means sparingly because their sugar content works against you hydrating with them.

WATER is what you hydrate with.

The bodys homeostatic regulation works on a negative feedback principle. By drinking a hot drink, you raise your core temperature and the body then takes steps to cool off. By drinking a cold drink, your body will try to retain heat

Watered down Gatorade for the electrolyte replacement. You lose a surprising amount of salt when you're expected to dig 8 hours a day at an Archaeological site in the summer....

Water is best. Mineral water (not popular in America) is also very good because it actually replaces the stuff you sweat out.

The last time I had a bad bout with dehydration, I drank some Gatored Recovery drink after getting hydrated again (with water) and it made me right as rain.

I do know though that the Tour De France cyclists drink water that is body temprature. Too cold or too hot shocks the body.

That's the European attitude. They say that drinking something the temperature of your body keeps you from getting sick. I'm sure there's some good science to that but a cold drink is still more appealing.

Water--probably neither cold nor hot, but slightly cool/not cold. I know it doesn't sound appealing, but water that would be slightly warm would not need the body to produce energy to either heat or cool after drinking. That way, it can be used to cool the body without the need for the body to use more energy and heat to process it.
