So I am currently taking an Environmental Science course and Everyone in my class is so gloom and doom about global climate change/warming. My teacher gives an hour and half long lecture twice a week about how much humans suck and were such horrible creatures that are destroying the planet. Honestly, we can't seem to do anything! We invent the car. Excellent idea! NOT! the emissions are screwing up the environment. We invent ways to get rid of pest(pesticides, insecticides) that eat our crops or we want our crops to grow a little faster(fertilizer) Excellent Idea! NOT! Leads to water contamination and we shouldn't kill animals, they have right to eat to. Can't live in cities-smog and other pollution. Event the highway...do I even need to explain? Can't live in rural/surburban areas-you have to drive to get places,(car is bad!) and you are more likely to become obese(Oh obesity is such a big issue nowadays especially in America....We don't seem to pick on cigarette smokers much, though) . Figure out Electricity, but now were running out of fossil fuels and coal is bad for the environment. We try to help a little by recycling...and then we learn that some of the things we recycle either wind up right in a landfill like everything else of just get shipped to developing countries for them to "deal" with. Edit: Energy saving lightbulbs? No good! It has mercury vapor in them. Electric car? No good! Because of the materials they use for the battery.
What CAN we do??? Despite my little rant I'm not sure i really have a stance yet. So do you think it's Anthropogenic (due to human activity) Natural(it just a cycle. Think Ice age.)? or just a load of bologna?
What's your stance on global climate change?

Our earth science and climatology people aren't 100% sure whether or not we're in a mini ice age or an inter-glacial period so I don't think we can say whether our actions are damaging the environment or not.

However I think that we are the only animal on this planet capable of damaging it and we need to be careful what we're doing.

Humans do suck, but are we destroying the planet? Us, we...little people...no, we're not destroying or killing the planet. That's absolutely ridiculous.

"The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We've been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we've only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we're a threat? That somehow we're gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that's just a-floatin' around the sun?The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles...hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worldwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages...And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet...the planet...the planet isn't going anywhere. WE ARE!" ~George Carlin~

Global warming? I honestly think that notion is crap. Climate change is natural.
That's my stance. People are destroying each other, animals, and they destroy what they create because they suck.

Use your own eyes, and look at the land. Go on google earth and look at the scale of the human feed lots (farms) in middle america, europe and across the entire planet. Look closely for the colors and then zoom out. Look at us cull bio-diversity, see with your own eyes what industrial agriculture has destroyed. You say it's conceit, but this planet is not as big as I think you imagine it to be. Not to mention, the impossibility to maintain our current growth.

What damage can we possibly do that would be greater than the force of nature?

Nothing human beings create was pulled out of the ether. Trial and error, refinement of process, but still organic beings at the helm. Why would I make a distinction between the human race and the force of nature? We are nature, we just happen to be aware of ourselves in a more refined sense.

we get more green house gases in the atmosphere by just 1 volcanic eruption than all man has done. God will not allow man to do what God doesn't want. If we destroy it, He will make it again.

We need to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It's not exactly urgent, not a disaster now. I wouldn't freak out about it, but it should be changed.

I think humans possibly cause it to happen but I feel like the Earth always goes through natural climate change. The ice age? we werent there to cause that and the world thawed out.

Uncooked and non-convoluted data suggests that climate has been wavering up and down for centuries, and there's little evidence that strong sales of the 1545 Horse-drawn SUVs caused either the little ice age or the warming trend that followed. I blame the Sun for warming and not warming the planet, not man.

while man is polluting the enviorment global warming is not one of it's affects. now if you want to talk about dumping trash and biological and chemical and solid wastes into the oceans and rivers then you have something there. oh by the way to claim or classify co2 as a pollutant is one of the most stupid things I ever heard, that is like saying oxygen is a pollutant or water vapor, which is 95 times more heat trapping then co2.

co2 is life for plants and ultimatly you and me. they give off oxygen from that co2.

I read that a planet, can't remember which, venus? can't remember they said this planets atmosphere is 90 percent co2 and is only slightly warmer then our planet. I will have to look that up again.

It's happening, and whilst china is pumping out pollution like they are and everyone is driving around in huge gas guzzling cars, and we have zillions of cows 'introducing' methane into the atmosphere everyday, I don't see what difference me screwing in an energy saving lightbulb will do. Although, I will point out that I am energy negative as far as electricity is concerned, as I have solar ... But ... It's happening, and I doubt we can change it now ...

ohhh if my instructor heard you say the whole "what can I do, I'm just one person" excuse he'd go off on a tangent. And apparently energy saving light bulbs aren't really that great. There's mercury vapor in them...just one way we've tried to help but failed. Just like the electric car.

lol Apparently whatevers used in the batteries of electric cars is the issue. Can't remember exactly how or why.
