Children dont fall into unguarded heroin and drown....

I would actually bet you money that MORE people die from pools than heroin.

If you die from heroin that is simply an example of Darwin's theory at work.

Someone stoned on heroin in the swimming pool is more dangerous, Lol.

Because they usually pee in the pool, Lol.

Roughly 36000 people a year die in drowning incidents a year, more than 90% of which are in North American Swimming Pools (CDC)

Roughly 3500-5000 people a year die from overdoses of Heroin. (CDC)

What measures are taken to prevent this.

70% are children under 5. The rest are usually from accidents that occur in or around the pool. Fencing and alarms are required but not retro-active. Insurance companies will not insure homes unless there are alarms etc now so it is improving. But it will be a slow process.

In the Netherlands swimming lessons during school time (schoolzwemmen, school swimming) , in effect children between 4-12 years old , are supported by the government.
    That means .
Most schools include swimming lessons into their Physical Education curricula, often provided in the nearest public pool.
There is a long tradition of swimming lessons in the Netherlands; the Dutch translation for the breaststroke swimming style is schoolslag (schoolstroke)

Also in many towns, swimming lessons are provided by local swimming pools, both those run by the local authority and by private leisure companies.

All swimming instructors in The Netherlands are required to have recognised professional certificates.
All managers must be in possession of a swimming instructor-certificate recognised by the ministry of Health and Education.

As in the US children under 4 are here more at risk by drowing.
    At home:
For instance in those little plastic undeep pools for toddlers.
    A pond.
The availability a a privite swimming pool in your house/garden is far less than in the US.

    Outside the home and garden:
    Falling into ditches and canals.

A very watchfull eye of the parents themselves, but also neighbours is essential.

The reason why learning to swim is endorsed has a very practical reason.
Children live often in the vicinity of water.
Learning to swim at an early age can prevent a lot of accidental drowing.

I don't know the figures but I think that drowning in a local swimming pool is less that in and around the house.

Yep. All of what you say is true, BUT, the fact remains, here in the US, fatalities in and around swimming pools are increasing even with the precautions being taken.

The idea of teaching children to swim was very common in the 1950's. Not today. People don't "have the time or money" to do so.

    That is sad!

American schools have often more sportfacilities than we do here!
However I don't know if that is also the case in primary schools in the USA.

Why not put them in use for this important issue!

k-8 schools hardly ever have swimming pools. High Schools 9-12 usually do have pools. The problem is that teaching children to swim has been deemed a parental problem.

Well, swimming pools is what I get for being in a hurry. Answer should be heroin. You can try swimming in a pool and if you dislike it, not go again. But if you try heroin and dislike, you may not be able to not use it again.

Both heroin and swimming pools kill, but I've lost a nephew to heroin and have not lost anyone to swimming pools. So, clearly, statistically, heroin is infinitely more deadly than a swimming pool, since 1/0 is infinity; and statistics don't lie. Do they?

While the incident statistics would support pools (or water, in general) as more dangerous, on a per-incident basis for drowning, Heroin wrecks more lives than it kills. You don't have to die from heroin for it to be dangerous, and for it to wreak havoc on your life and those around you.

Abigail Taylor, a six-year-old girl from Minnesota, was killed when she sat on a swimming pool drain to rest while swimming at the Golf Club Pool. The pump sucked her intestines from her body. After multiple surgeries, organ transplants, and nearly thirty million dollars in medical expenses, she died. Her body was not able to recover from the wretched accident.
    1. You can drown.

    2. You can forget to shower, give everyone diseases, and die.

    3. You can slip, crack your head, and die.

    4. You can dive, snap your neck, and die.

    5. If there's lightning you can be electrocuted and die.

    6. Chemicals give you cancer and you can die.

I am sure more people have died in pools, but out of all the people who have ever used a pool only a tiny percentage have been injured by that use. Out of all the people who have used herion only a tiny percentage have NOT been injured by the use.

Dihydrogen Monoxide is responsible for more mishaps than heroin. In both cases, choice to use is usually the factor, but sometimes one just falls in.

It's that old game of how you measure the risk but measured as a rate of exposure vs injury and death Heroin will win (or lose?) that war - it's just that there's a lot fewer people using Heroin than strolling by swimming pools. That said, well regulated and taxed legalized drugs aren't that bad an idea although opiates might need to wait until we better understand the impact of legalized and regulated Marijuana.

Many drowning deaths can be prevented. If parents took precautions then many accidents wouldn't happen. Isn't it a law now that there must be a fence around the pool?
Anyway, teach your kids how to swim & to not swim alone.
Pool owners with children in the house should have the pool fenced off (if it's an in-ground pool. I would say just teach your kids to stay out of it while no ones watching them but do kids really listen? No.)
And if it's an above ground pool, put a chain & lock around the ladder while it's in the up position. If they can't get in the pool then they can't drown in it.

but at the same time can't many deaths from heroin be avoided by educating about its harmful effects too?
