What's an Appropriate Age for a Child to Get Their Own Facebook Page?

We've talked about Facebook leading to break-ups (divorce lawyers say it does), we've talked about the new Facebook timeline (most people don't like the updated look), heck...we've even talked about how the majority of you feel addicted to the Internet (61 percent and counting.) But now it's time to talk about Facebook... and age appropriateness.

With ever-evolving features and layouts, Facebook continues to have a big impact on how people interact in the digital world they've created for themselves -- but how soon is too soon? Once you open a Facebook account, it's official: you've started the process of leaving a digital footprint in the world -- for anyone to discover. Is that something a kid in elementary school is ready for? Or do you think Facebook is more of a harmless pastime for someone of any age group to enjoy? That's for you to decide. What do you think is an appropriate age for someone to get a Facebook account?

Parents shouldn't let their children have Facebooks until they are old enough. My mom made me wait until I was old enough to make one but you see on facebook 7 year olds that's a perfect way for a pedophile to get his hands on your children. They need to be mature enough to understand the dangers that are on the internet. I actually didn't make one until I was a Freshmen in high school. I mean Facebook isn't all that great to begin with why do we need little children on social media sites?

I got one at 10 and me and my friends played the games and chatted and created little friendship (private) clubs. We only added people we know and have met, not just have seen. By 12 it got a lot more social and we planned things like hanging out at this place for people 12 1/2 to 17 and the mall. We added people we know and we chatted outside of school and shared family trip photos and little hangouts with friends. We only add people we know or have seen now, and I have been safe since. There is no problem at all.

This is a good age in my opinion. However, all people (not juts kids) should learn to break away from the computer and do something else that is valuable. Like climbing or mountain, or spending time with a friend (IN PERSON), or not being on facebook at their job! Heck go outside or draw a picture. Do something that will postively stimulate your mind. I have had Facebook for about 3 weeks now...not obsessed...I'm on it maybe once a day or every other day for ten minutes. It's nice to talk to my friend in Michigan and talk to long distance family with.

Back then we didn't have social media when i was a kid, only till i was a teenager myspace came out, we only had phone numbers still i think its pretty lenient to have a teenager have an account but why would a child need facebook? They should be playing with friends or doing something fun.

Really I think "never" should have been offered as an answer choice. Facebook has proven to be unreliable with its privacy settings and policies. It is really a spying operation with many millions of self-created dossiers.* Members don't know where their information is going or how it will be used. Facebook serves the police state we live in because cops have used it to locate and arrest people. Facebook abuses its members by disabling their accounts for frivolous reasons, putting ridiculous friending limits on some members, and other forms of irksome harassment. Facebook is a huge waste of time.

You don't have a cell phone? Pretty much all cell phones include long distance plans included at no extra cost beyond normal rates... at least for your own country anyway. But if you don't, then yeah I guess just use social sites. All I am saying is it seems impersonal to me. I like to hear my friend's voices, hear them laugh, etc... text on a screen has no emotion... I just loose interest easier in what people write.

I have a webcam. Does that count?
  • Chris NoHandl... 2012/03/03 05:15:08 (edited)

Better than text on a screen... I'm not anti-social site or anything, I do like the Google+ idea about hangouts with video chats and the iChat for Apple devices.

I am just not personally too favorable towards writing text on my friend's walls instead of calling them. I guess I'm old fashioned.

I see where you're coming from.
If I want to talk with a friend who lives in my town, I usually just call and arrange for us to hang out.

The problem is, as you said, I don't have a cell phone, and a lot of people I know in Ohio don't have mics or webcams, so the boring text on a screen that you're reading is as personal as it gets unless I happen to be staying in Ohio for some reason.

A lot of people use Facebook to interact with people outside their social group. I use it to keep contact with overseas family. You can't just assume Facebook is for the socially inept.
  • Chris Ruby De... 2012/03/03 05:20:36

Yes, actually I can if I want to. That's why it's called an assumption and not a fact, an assumption requires no evidence to be taken as what you believe is a fact.

Nevertheless, I agree that it can come in handy for family, as I too prefer to not talk to them that much. :P

I've told both my kids they'renot allowed to have a Facebook profile until they're 13. So of course they've attempted to create them at friends houses. When I find the profiles, I report them.

When a person has graduated from high school and has a job and purchased their own computer and internet connection then they can have facebook if they really still want it, i think people are going to start turning their face away from facebook in the near future.

12 is as low as it should go, but really it depends how mature you're kid is, all kids are different and parents should remember that :),i think its really about if you think they are ready though, also...why would a 7 year old need/want a facebook account?

I don't think it has a set age. Kids mature at different rates. I think the minimum should be 13, but I believe parents should observe their kids and decide when they are mature enough to handle facebook and the dangers of the Internet.

I'd say 16, but that's pushing it, knowing what kind of crazies are out there & can access more than what a person who is not a consenting adult could encounter.

Don't read this message if you are not "18 " yr old yet.

Oops. I didn't see there was 13 yr old choice - I would pick that one. ;) 13 yr old makes sense, It's like when puberty hits they would have their facebook page set already)) LoL

I think that 10-13 is fine as long as parents don't put the veto on it (which would make fb page more desirable) and explain their daughters that fapping onto your fb page for hours is retarded. Every child must be warned that any relationships on the internet are not real. There were numerous cases of suicide related to internet and stuff. That's just too Japanese.

Some troll (like me) on the internet told fat ugly girl she s beautiful trololo they had romantic love, but than he told her she was ugly and fat, so she killed herself. I mean. this is insane. dont be like that.

Finally, how would you stop 7 yr old from having fb page? All these web age limitations on porn can be avoided by a single click. Even a 7yrold can figure out where to click. lol So if parents are not around or not involved in computers so much, then..its inevidable

PS please dismiss my avatar, it is just troll thing, not related anyhow to anything.

PPS see? I ve put the warning sign in the beginning of this post, but u ve still read it, though you r clearly not...

PPPS Lol once when I was like 12 or so. I got into porn web site which actually had test in the beginning with some serious questions which normal child would not know the answer to. I did some research of course (google helps!) and passed it. And here I am, clearly an evil monster in flesh and blood. (*evil laugh*)
