Newsweek columnist Robert J. Samuelson recently wrote: "We face a choice between a society where people accept modest sacrifices for a common good or a more contentious society where group selfishly protect their own benefits."

The last time in recent history when folks in the US sacrificed for the Common Good was during WW2 (the Big One)- scrap metal drives, gas rationing, food rationing, war bonds, no new cars, etc. folks really sacrificed to help America win the war. Can you imagine soemthing like that today? Sacrifice for the Common Good is a relic of the past- now its all about getting getting mine baby. screw that other guy. It's so prevelant in society- entertainment, politics, everday life.

Maybe that sentiment will return. Right now, it's all about me-me-me-me-me-me-me in our society. America is no longer the greatest country in the world like it once was.

Part of it is the 1980s where it became OK to be a backstabbing, self-serving corporate saboteur, part of it is the two World Wars and Dulce Et Decorum Est http://www.warpoetry.co.uk/ow...

Because most of the working people pay for the 49% who do nothing but take from the workers. Tired of it.

VOLUNTARY and UN-COERCED sacrifice is a a noble thing. Forcing others to 'sacrifice' as through taxes is theft by proxy.

Congress voted for the US to join WW2- wasn't that "forced sacrifice?"

As it happens, yes! The American people wouldn't have been dragged into the war kicking and screaming otherwise.

Now whether that was a good thing or a bad one I'll leave up to the reader. :-)

Sacrifice for the common good went the way of respect, responsibility for one's own actions, having good manners, caring for our families instead of sticking them in a nursing home and a whole lot of others ideals for which America stood at one point,

No, but that is not what we are discussing here, you are trying to tie honorable sacrifices (of WWII soldiers) in with dishonorable thieving from American taxpayers.

My Father fought in WWII, and he was an honorable man who was completely against Communists! Don't you DARE taint his name or the name of any of the others who fought for the freedom you want to throw away for "free stuff".

You make me want to barf, what a disgrace!
