This ultimate cat fight has happened more times than you might expect. The Romans pitted African lions against Asian tigers in the Coliseum, to the rip-roaring pleasure of the Plebeians. A few fights were also staged in the early decades of the 20th century, and on several modern occasions, accidental cross-species encounters at zoos have quickly developed into gruesome scenes guaranteed to scar any nearby schoolchildren for life.

The lion's mane is there to protect it from another lion's teeth, lions are throat bitters, so the tiger will try to "kill bite" the neck, but the mane will prevent him from getting a killing blow. The lion will take advantage and tear out the tiger throat. (sorry i love tigers, but thats how it would most likely play out)

Tigers are almost always alone and have to hunt and defend on their own. Lions hunt and fight in prides, only if the males are having a personal dispute over who gets the ladies do they fight alone. Otherwise they don't even hunt, just lounge about all day. Put a tiger against a lion and my bet is the lions pretty main will be used to wipe the floor.

There was a documentary made of Lions and Hyenas that was great...the hyenas had treed all 7 female lions up a tree and they were growling and the hyenas were making a racket for several minutes....then suddenly the male lion rushed in out of nowhere and he was pissed off. He charged the female matriarch of the Hyenas and with one swipe he broke her back. This Lion was angry and he roared at the hyenas and they split the scene...the females meekly jumped out of the tree and it looked and sounded like he was quite upset with them for being treed....awesome documentary...The male is generally a lazy ass but when he has to assert himself, damn he does it!!!

I've only seen the virtual fight between a Tiger and a Lion on "Face Off" and the lion came of best in that encounter, but I wouldn't like to put any money on it.
