What would America be like without cheap Chinese imports ?

You!

There is a lot to be said for an affordable warm jacket in the biting cold, or a warm pair of boots, or a sleeping bag and a tent when you have no home.
What would the US be like for the poor of America if these affordable imported goods suddenly were not available anymore.? How many jobs at Wall Mart would disappear, not to mention all the other big box shops, who would suddenly have nothing cheap to sell. Imagine your home if you removed everything made in China out. Would it look a bit empty ? Would your kids have as many clothes or shoes or toys ?

We might not have as much stuff but we'd sure have more jobs.

Do we really need half of what we buy? I do try to look for the things I buy that says "Made in America" I wish everything could be. Think of the jobs that would be created.

It wasn't that long ago that China wasn't the manufacturing powerhouse that it is now. Seems to me that we did just fine back then. Cheap labor is available in many third world countries. In fact they want companies to set up shop there. Look at how cheap labor raised Thailand's economy.
According to some, we may not have long before China is out of the cheap labor market. Workers there are starting to demand higher wages.

Absolutely ! Every country needs their jobs back and it's up to small business to do it because the big corps won't. Small business is the real engine that produces jobs in America and the world. The Government should extend HUGE payroll tax credits to SMALL businesses only, for a limited time say a year, if they hire the unemployed ,. it would kick start the job market again because small business wouldn't want to miss out on an offer like that. They would immediately start hiring again I think.

Although I haven't been in the US in 40 years or so, I seem to remember when we got along with much less stuff. Just what is it that's made in China that you can't do without?

A good percentage of it ends up in landfills not three months after purchase cause it's cheap crap that doesn't last.

In the US, we said the same thing about "Jap junk" in the 50s and 60s. But China's problems are so great that I doubt they will ever make anything decent. Except for steam locomotives of course, but that's because no other country makes them!

Physically or mentally or economically or environmentally ? Remember all the pollution problems from manufacturing would come back to the US again.. . and with all the corporations demanding the easing of EPA regulations and high unemployment.. .

Americans need to care about tomorrow instead of living for the moment.
