...the Russians thought it better that palin be here to destroy America rather than there to destroy Russia...

They needed money so they dumped Alaska onto America...and probably regretted it later. Still, Russia alone has the most natural resources in the world, so not too much harm done.

Resources they can't get at. They're poor and weak. They have no capital, their numbers are falling, they already have barely 20 people per square mile. But since almost 80% of Russia's population is West of the Urals, the population density of Siberia is less than 1 person per square mile, which means in effect vast stretches of it are in fact entirely uninhabited. Where there's no people you can't make any money. Which is why Russia's GDP is lower than Germany's, despite the fact that Russia has infinitely more resources than Germany. In fact Russia's GDP is only about half that of Japan's, which is just a group of islands only about 1/50 of Russia's size. It's very easy to exaggerate Russia's strength. They're not all that powerful. Especially not economically.

The Russians didn't have the ability to exploit the area. The number of settlers was incredibly few, it wasn't of much value to them. Plus the Russians had just lost the Crimean War and were in a bad financial state. Their weakness was glaringly revealed as they lacked railways which meant that ships from France and Britain could reach the Crimea before soldiers from Russia could going overland. Rather embarrassing. Russia needed money for railways and for a lot of other things, 1867 was before France lost to Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War, so the Bourse wasn't handing the Russians money like candy as it was to do in later years, in France's desperate attempt to modernise Russia mainly so Russia could save France from Germany. I don't think there was much fear of Britain taking it, it would be extremely difficult for the British to organise an expedition for that purpose, it would be too much hassle and not enough reward.

Of course history can be biased, we were taught that because England was already in Canada the Russians feared they would eventually move into Alaska, All those things you said could be the reason too.

Well it's not like a board game where England has pieces in Canada and then just simply moves them one space over into Alaska. The British presence in North-West Canada was never very great, most times it was probably non-existent. It's not like the British had thousands of men in the empty North waiting to pounce on Alaska. The distances involved would be incredible, far more than anything in Europe. There's no infrastructure, nothing to support men. The British would not only have to move men up to the frontier, they'd have to build roads and railways to supply them, build shelters for them, gather guns and equipment. All of which would take time, and be incredibly expensive. Gaining Alaska would be hardly any benefit for the British. They, like the Russians, hadn't the numbers to exploit it economically. Most of Canada itself was empty and going to waste because the British didn't have the people to develop it. Adding Alaska would just add more worthless territory.

They were afraid a war with England would make it hard to defend Alaska. So rather than loose it they sold it ! ..I think !

Yes, that is what we were taught, because England was already in Canada they might try to occupy and or claim Alaska

The tsar needed the money, plus Alaska was a financial drain for them to administer. They had no way of knowing what vast natural resources Alaska had. The tsar already had a vast empire that was difficult to rule in an autocratic manner.

I think what you said could also be in their reasoning for selling, they had no idea the mineral value of Alaska , but we were taught that because England was already in Canada, they might try to occupy Alaska.

That sounds similar to what we learned too. The Russians told us to return Alaska to them during the Cold War. Right!

She didn't arrive soon enough, though.
30 years earlier, if Palin had been president rather than Reagan, Russia would have been the world's last superpower now.
