What Type of Dog Do You Prefer? (It May Hold the Clue to Your Personality)

You!

Do you love having a tiny pooch peeking out of your purse? Or do you prefer a bigger pup, preferably one who is always up for a game of Frisbee? Your answer to this question may say a lot about you. "We go for dogs that are a bit like us, just as we go for a romantic partner who is a bit like us," study researcher Lance Workman, a psychologist at Bath Spa University in the United Kingdom, told LiveScience.

dogs

Workman conducted a survey of 1,000 owners of purebred dogs in collaboration with the Kennel Club, and found that owners of toy dogs (like Chihuahua-lover Paris Hilton) score high on "openness," meaning how intellectually curious, open to new experiences and appreciative of arts and culture a person is. (Does Paris Hilton really fit into this category?)

Along with toy dog owners, owners of gun dogs (such as the Labrador retriever or golden retriever) are the most agreeable. People who own pastoral breeds, including German shepherds and collies; or utility breeds, such as bulldogs, are the most extroverted. And the most emotionally stable people are likely to own hounds, including beagles, Afghans and greyhounds. So, spill it: What type of dog do you prefer?

One of his favorite things to do is to place his head on my chest while I'm watching tv on the sofa. I start scratching him and his head s-l-o-w-l-y comes up as he's really getting into it. If I stop scratch, his head goes THUD! on my chest as if he's trying to let me know he isn't done being petted.

One thing nice about springers like him is he's a BIG coward, but if someone comes to the door he makes a bark like a big dog. Crminals aren't going to see if the dog behind the door is going to chomp their arm off, but rather they will go somewhere else.

I always refer to Amos as "my little boy". He's spoiled and I like it that way!

Thank you so much for sharing. Have an awesome day!

Hi, lovely story indeed ! I know the nature of these dogs are so affectionate and
so kind. If I ever get another dog it will be another just like the one I had.
They are so beautiful and loyal. They will have your back if someone tries to approach your door or yourself. I just love their friendliness and playfulness.
They are truly one of the best breeds around. Once you have one you will swear by them as I'm sure you do ! Good luck with him. I would like to add you.
Anyone who loves Springers is a friend of mine. :))

Do Golden Retrievers and Black Labs fall under this category, I would assume they do? Because those are my favorite.

Oy! My first dog was a sweet shih-tzu. I got her when I was 16. Everyone kept saying (and I kept reading) how the breed was so stubborn and difficult to train. I couldn't understand. My dog wasn't like that. After I got married and she was alone a lot my husband and I decided to get her a friend. Another shih-tzu. This one was everything that I'd heard about! My first dog eventually had to be put down...She lived to 14. I did it when I was 7 months pregnant with our first and realized I did not want her to go through the trauma of a big move that we were going to be doing and a new baby with her senility. When our son was born our second shih-tzu went into a really deep depression (no kidding). The vet wanted to put her on prozac. I was like...she doesn't like kids and wants to BE the baby and that's okay. I am not medicating a dog. Our pet sitter was so happy to take her home to his wife who is retired (although now she is a fat little thing!) she is their grand baby! Now that our kids are 9 and 5 we have a labradoodle that we rescued. She is so easy and sweet...reminds me of my first dog! Sorry for the long post.....You looked so young, it took me back (oh, when I was a kid we had a yorkie named Pixie....)

Mine too. I put her under "Utility". What noble and sweet dogs they are! I love how their called "velcro dogs" because they stick right beside you. Everytime I'd get up to go into the kitchen she'd get up and stand right beside me. I miss her so much. Her tail was docked but she has her "natural" ears.

I suppose my preference would fall between utility and pastoral, because my favorites are Siberian Huskies and German Shepards.

Although really, I don't have any stipulation or whatever to what dog I own. All mine are rescues; two of them small (an Applehead Chihuahua mix and a Terripoo puppy), one medium (a Cocker Spaniel/Dauschund mix), and one large (Rotweiler/Queensland Heeler mix).

Quite a variety, none of which fall into my preference of breeds, but I love them all endlessly.

I would still categorize German Shepard's with utility, working breeds. They are used these days much more for guarding, defense, attack, police and scent type work than for Shepherding. Although they are still quite good at herding work along with defending the herd.

One of the hardest things to do with a German shepard is to get his attention. Once you get the dog to listen to you all the time you have a wonderful friend and protector indeed!

The tend to be more intelligent. I'll take a border collie over a lab ANY day. Mind you, I don't really want a dog, it's like having a child, far too much work.

If the daily walks weren't an issue, I would have to go for a toy breed because of my small apartment.

I put gun dog because I've always wanted a trained one to hunt with. Of all of the dogs that I've owned, I can say with no doubt an English Masstiff was my favorite. I had a female and when full grown she wieghed 210 lbs. She wasn't fat either. Nobody in their right mind would have ever tried to hurt any family member and I could trust her with a new born baby. GREAT DOGS!
