What should law enforcement do about dangerous high speed chases?

Innocent bystanders account for one-third of those who are killed in high-speed police chases, a USA TODAY review has found. The deaths have several communities around the USA wrestling with whether to restrict pursuits only to suspects in violent crimes.

About 360 people are killed each year in police chases, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Proponents of more restrictive chase policies say the fatality numbers are lower than the real toll because there is no mandatory reporting system for deaths in pursuits.

I.D. the car, get some pictures....if he exceeds a certain speed, there should be an order to shoot the bastard. At some point someone driving a certain speed is becoming a murderer, or someone willing to put anyones life in danger to get what he wants... if he gets away then there is detective work to do and innocent people will live another day.

I actually thing they are starting to do a good job of staying in striking distance using the helicopters to do the tracking.

Since we are slowly becoming a socialist police state, the little black boxes they want to put in our vehicles to monitor them and tax us by the mile will eventually have the capability of disabling our vehicles. For our safety of course. Buzzy

While I think there are some things we can do in order to change the outcome to where it is only fatal or dangerous to the one being chased, I'm not sure it's up to us to decide which criminals should be chased and which shouldn't. The police should be able to make judgement calls at the time.

It is the criminal not the police who are at fault. I'm thinking make the penalty so high and mandatory from running from the police that no one will take the risk. If someone is injured or killed during a chase that charge should be added to the crime such as attempted murder or murder.

Use helicopters as quickly as possible whenever/wherever available. Serial killers will speed away at all costs and need to be caught.

There has to be limits on chases that limits speeds in populated areas. There should be requirements on lights and sirens as well. I have seen several times where an officer is running high speed in a mixed zOne area with just lights. That is a recipe for disaster.

There needs to be a limit placed on these kind of chases. Whether that be a maximum speed that they can chase (dependent on the type of street and location) or whether it's once they have an ID on the person being chased (such as a visual confirmation or a license plate number that doesn't come back stolen) then they back off. It isn't worth the loss of life or destruction to private or public property.

I'd restrict certain areas and other dangerous situations, especially if it's someone they can catch later without putting the public at danger.
