What should Calif. do about their crowded prison system?

Colonize Australia. Give them land grants to farm kangaroos. Market kangaroo meat to the hungry masses of China. Huge profits for the state of Cali.

They Should quit putting so many people in prison for drugs. I have always believed they should legalize all drugs. I don't understand why people think they have the right to tell others what they can or can't put in their own bodies its bs

If they're going to do that they should put at least a tax equal to what's on tobacco on each unit sold to pay for the prison system upkeep and the damage that weed smokers do... also, tax the people that bring the stuff from across the border and let them help pay for the damage that their compatriots do especially in the border states.

Weed is pretty much legal in California now and they sell it in shops I'm sure they do tax it. I don't understand what damage it is that you say weed smokers cause. If it were legal it would definitly be taxed and could certainly help the economy instead of making billions for these drug lords

How about taxing ASPERTAME instead... go off Aspertame and many pain symptoms go away.... no need for weed....

got a good friend, a thirty year addict of Aspertame, who has gone off Aspertame and after even a few days is able to stand longer and no longer needs 12 aspirin per day for pain management. The pins and needles in her face are gone and she was able to walk a block to the store today. BIG improvements.....and all she did was give up the aspertame...

not sure what you meant by a "d'oh" comment but if you're saying "duh" to "going off aspertame" then it just adds some fuel/support to the argument (for lack of a better word)....if you're thinking weed should be legal and taxed for economic reasons, then the comment still gives input as to a better means of easing pain for many people, if they would do it.

You want the cynical approach? They should stop with the unbearably slow death row process and execute the prisoners in a timely manner. If you look at the number of people on death row, you know it would be a start. Legalizing pot is another step--keep the marijuana offenders out of jail and just high on the streets.

They should do what every other prison in the country should do - namely, release people who're arrested for drug/pot possession and use.

Take all the really violent ones, give them guns, put them all together in the yard, and let them all kill each other. Then get up volunteer firing squads and get rid of all the death row inmates.

They should release people incarcerated on non-violent drug charges FIRST. Oh, and speed-up DNA testing so they can release the wrongfully convicted.

They need to have more house arrest for those arrested for non violent crimes.

For minimum security offenders, fines, house arrest, and community service are a possibility. That should lower the prison population some. For the more hard core or heinous criminals, the death penalty is a viable option. Many are in on simple drug possesion and that is ridiculous.

they should:
end the War on Drugs, and release those incarcerated simply for possession or cultivation of marijuana
deport the illegals in the system, that's about 6% of their prison population iirc.

Do those two things and they'll have plenty of prison room for violent offenders.

I think one killer will be walking the streets in a very short time. I don't know what they need to do to fix this.

Let out the ones that got life for a couple pounds of POT. Deport the wetbacks that are choking the prisons.

Or just let Joe Arpaio take over the Cali penal system.

They should either build more prisons or start killing off the current prisoners, but no, they will have more early releases & of course more repeat offenders. Execute the Filth & demand tougher crime laws...........

Bring back firing squads.

Early release for those whose offenses were non-violent would be a help as would decriminalization of drugs.

More programs for drug abusers OUTSIDE prison. They're costly but more effective than prison.

I think if they took away all the luxuries many prisons have, not so many people would be doing things to land themselves in one. I go for that famous southwestern sheriff's idea of chain gangs, no A/C. no fitness room. 1 hour of tv a night, no library. it is not a hotel, it is a jail! Punishment not a life of almost luxury.

Hmmm. I'm all in favor of inmates having some quality of life. And I don't so much see it as punishment as protection for the rest of society to have malefactors behind bars.

Prison is supposed to be punishment for crimes against society. That is what they were created for. And in many cases it only protects us from the inmates for a certain period of time because once they are let out, many commit the same crimes all over again. They need to get tougher with less priviledges as many commit the crimes again because life on the inside is sometimes better than life on the streets.And it shouldn't be that way. The criminals in many prisons have so many amenities that they come out far wiser and sneakier than when they went in.

Yes, some inmates DO deliberately try to get back into prison. Why? Not because it's so great but because that is how they are acculturated. The outside world is scary and unknown. For them, it's a case of better the devil you know.

There has to be a better way.

Yeah there is, try them and fry them. We have inmates on death row that have been there for 20 yrs.they have had plenty of time to appeal. it's time to save space and tax payers money and let them really pay for the henious crimes they committed that gave them the death sentence to start with.

Sorry. having been a victim of sorts, my daughter was the real victim, I do look at it differently because I know the life lasting effects a violent crime can have on the victim first hand.

You are welcome. I work as an activist for victims of violent crimes that have never seen justice. Most were children who were raped, beaten, and witnessed other children being murdered by the very clergy who were responcible for their care in residential schools and orphanages. The damage for them has been life long as they are all adults now but this is still going on today in some church run institutions. If your child was molested or raped, I am sure you would want justice to the full extent of the law. There is no cure for pedophiles ever. That is why I have the attitude of try them and fry them. My daughter did see her abuser go to prison and through years of counceling, she was able to put it behind her and live a normal happy life but she will never forget what was done to her while i was at work and unknowing. And i will never forget what someone i thought was trustworthy with her care while i was gone did to her. I will never forget the years of acting out, attempted suicide,drugs and alcohol abuse and time in juevie for small time crimes she committed while acting out. I nearly ended up in a padded room myself and also needed long term counceling not only because of what he did but because of what she was doing also. There are always two sides to an opinion.
