Experts say that there is no one right way to sleep. However, most of us (57%) sleep on our sides, according to a survey of more than 2,000 people by mattress maker Tempur-Pedic. 17%, the next largest percentage, sleep on their backs, while 11% sleep on their stomachs. The remaining respondents vary their sleeping positions.
"It's important that people take time to think about how they position themselves when they sleep," Peggy Brill, an orthopedic physical therapist from NYC, told the Wall Street Journal. "Rest is important for the muscular skeletal system to recover. The proteins get back into the muscles, there's rejuvenation of the body, so you want to be in a healthy anatomical position when you sleep."
According to experts it can be beneficial to vary your sleeping position to avoid always compressing or stretching one side of your body. Additionally, certain positions are better than others for individuals with certain conditions. If you have neck pain you should avoid sleeping on your stomach. Staying off your back can help those with sleep apnea/snoring or acid reflux.
