I just wish someone could explain to me why a one-way ticket often costs more than a round-trip ticket for the same destination.
All logic and reasoning dictates it should cost half as much.

cost is IMPORTANT, Layovers something to consider, also where your seat is.......I would rather sit by the window, I sat on the "row end" on my way to Orlando. This woman and some man every 10-15 minutes "had to go". I had to jump up or scoot my feet out of the way.....I was trying to eat lunch, THEY HAD TO GET OUT..........FAST !!!

Air travel has become so travel unfriendly and rife with stress lately that the only thing you reasonably have control over is the amount you are willing to pay to take a plane ride. Departure/arrival times, layovers, baggage claim have all become so unpredictable that we should wear all our clothes on the plane rather than take bags (this will also put the "strip" in strip searches and make that and pat downs more fun than they are now), carry a sleeping bag for the frequent delays/cancellations, and keep a jet pack handy if we need to be somewhere on time.

I used to choose the lowest price, but after a horrible service from the connecting flight All Nippon Airways, I would say that arline and route choice are also very important.

First, they have to have flights running on the days I want.
Second, if possible, I want to leave and arrive at reasonable time of the day, but if a flight is much cheaper leaving at 5am, I'll take it
Third, no matter how cheap it is, I will not take an airline that is not reputable. I like Qantas, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Virgin....that's about it. If I am considering another airline, I will research it.
But if a few airlines I like are ticking all the boxes, I just pick the cheapest one....In fact, I added a few extra hours to my trip to England because it was cheaper to fly from Adelaide->Sydney->Heathrow than it was to fly directly from Adelaide->Heathrow....saved me around $300....

Price and then schedule. I don't have a ton of money to fly and don't want to spend more than I have to. I just want to get from point A to point B as cheaply and expeditiously as possible. I want to spend my money at my destination, not in the getting there.

Price, 100%. I can deal with layovers (as long as they aren't ridiculous) and I'm not picky about my airline.

    The cheaper, the better.

Having said that, though, I also try to avoid having connections if possible. So, if I have to pay a little more for a nonstop, I'll do it.

Price is over-rated.... For a few dollars more fly an airline that actually cares and doesn't introduce it's new in flight oxygen charge at 35000 feet. I'll also stick to airlines withing my miles partnerships so I avoid scattering my FF miles all over Hell and creation.

I have about 600,000 frequent flier miles, so it really reduces the price anyways (I can fly free quite often).

I'm no expert but I think it's something to do with having a guaranteed filled seat for the return flight. Alternatively it's just another rip off!

But people want to go in both directions.
If people were flying in droves from Boston to Seattle, but the airline had to fly an empty plane back each time because nobody wanted to fly from Seattle to Boston, okay, then it would make sense to me.
I would love to take a tour sometime:
Fly New York to London, spend a week, fly to Berlin, spend a week, fly to Rome, spend a week, fly to Cairo, spend a week, then fly back home to New York without having to retrace all my steps.
Due to price, I'd instead need to buy round-trip tickets and skip the return flights.

the 'pacage' deal...'presale' is the Idea...I fly 'standby' frequently, and at times I get there for less than the fuel it takes to carry my weight. I used to build them, so the math, is second nature.
